Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Compensation: The salary for this position ranges from $17.38 to $26.69, commensurate with experience.

The Medical Assistant will support physicians in various aspects of patient care, including clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks, ensuring a high level of patient satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Accompany patients to examination or procedure rooms.
    • Assist patients with mobility, dressing, specimen collection, and preparation for examinations.
    • Gather patient information and history, take vital signs, and perform screenings as per provider guidelines.
    • Communicate instructions to patients and their families.
  • Adhere to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and other relevant regulations.
  • Obtain laboratory and radiology reports, hospital notes, and referral information.
  • Complete necessary forms and requisitions.
  • Organize and manage patient charts to ensure accurate and timely information is filed.
    • Schedule patient appointments.
    • Verify insurance details and patient demographics.
  • Prepare examination rooms and set up medical instruments and equipment according to departmental protocols.
    • Maintain cleanliness of examination and procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment to uphold infection control standards.
    • Manage inventory of medical supplies and restock examination rooms as needed.
  • Monitor schedules and facilitate patient flow.
  • Respond to phone inquiries and provide relevant information, including patient education as directed.
  • Execute clinic procedures in accordance with established policies and protocols.
    • Assist physicians during medical procedures.
  • Comply with regulatory agency requirements (e.g., OSHA, CLIA, PA Department of Health).
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding medical records and sensitive information.
  • Follow all UPMC Health System policies and procedures.
  • Under physician supervision, administer injectable medications and vaccines when appropriate.
  • Perform additional front office duties as required.
  • Exhibit performance in alignment with system-wide competencies and behaviors.
  • Carry out other assigned tasks as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is mandatory.
  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with medical terminology, examination, diagnostic, and treatment room responsibilities are essential.

For Senior Medical Assistant:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Successful completion of a Medical Assistant Program or equivalent hospital program (LPN/RN/EMT)
    • OR successful completion of a certification examination (AMT, AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, or NHA)
    • OR a minimum of one year of patient care experience is required.
  • Must demonstrate responsibility and proficiency in three specific practice categories.
  • Basic computer skills and knowledge of medical terminology, examination, diagnostic, and treatment room responsibilities are required.

Applicants will be assigned to the appropriate job title and salary based on their individual experience and education within the Medical Assistant Career Ladder.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • CPR certification is required based on AHA standards, including both a theoretical and practical skills demonstration within 30 days of hire.
  • Clearances must be current within 90 days.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification is necessary.
  • Act 34 clearance is required.
