Position Overview

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Compensation: The salary range for this role is $17.38 to $26.69, commensurate with experience.

The Medical Assistant will support physicians in various facets of patient care, including clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks, ensuring a high level of patient satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Accompany patients to examination or procedure rooms.
    • Assist patients with mobility, transfers, dressing, specimen collection, and preparation for examinations.
    • Gather patient information and history, measure vital signs, and conduct screenings per provider guidelines.
    • Communicate instructions to patients and their families.
  • Adhere to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and other relevant regulations.
  • Obtain laboratory and imaging reports, hospital notes, and referral information.
  • Complete necessary forms and requisitions.
  • Organize and manage patient charts to ensure accurate and timely filing.
    • Schedule appointments.
    • Verify insurance coverage and patient demographics.
  • Prepare examination rooms, setting up instruments and equipment in accordance with departmental protocols.
    • Maintain cleanliness of exam and procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits to uphold infection control standards.
    • Manage inventory of medical supplies; restock examination and procedure rooms as needed.
  • Monitor schedules and facilitate patient flow.
  • Respond to calls and provide relevant information, including patient education as directed.
  • Execute clinic procedures in alignment with established policies and protocols.
    • Assist physicians during procedures.
  • Comply with the requirements of regulatory agencies (e.g., OSHA, CLIA, PA Department of Health).
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding medical records and other sensitive information.
  • Adhere to all UPMC Health System policies and procedures.
  • Under the supervision of a physician, administer injectable medications and vaccines when appropriate.
  • Perform additional front office responsibilities as required.
  • Exhibit competencies and behaviors in accordance with system-wide standards.
  • Fulfill other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with medical terminology, examination, diagnostic, and treatment room responsibilities are essential.

For Senior Medical Assistant:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Successful completion of a Medical Assistant Program or equivalent hospital program (LPN/RN/EMT) or successful completion of a certification examination (AMT, AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, or NHA) or at least one year of patient care experience is required.
Demonstrated responsibility and proficiency in three specific tasks related to practice categories.Basic computer skills and knowledge of medical terminology, examination, diagnostic, and treatment room responsibilities are necessary.

Applicants will be assigned to the appropriate job title and salary from the Medical Assistant Career Ladder based on their individual experience and education.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • CPR certification is required based on AHA standards, including both a didactic and skills demonstration component.
  • Clearances must be current.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification is necessary.
  • Act 34 clearance is required.
