Job Summary

The Patient Financial Advisor is a key member of our team at The University of Kansas Health System, responsible for providing financial support to patients and families across the health system.

Key Responsibilities
  • Engage with patients or families to gather information on sponsorship linkage, including health insurance, homeowner's insurance, workman's compensation insurance, pre-paid packages, grants, studies, COBRA, VA benefits, Crime Victim, auto insurance, Medicaid, or Medicare.
  • Assess patients with financial requirements and assist them in resolving payment issues for their accounts, including negotiating settlements, working with insurance providers, exploring public assistance options, arranging payments, offering charity support, or dealing with bad debt.
  • Update patient account and demographic details accurately, reviewing the account promptly to ensure that verification and pre-certification processes are correct.
  • Identify potential Medicaid or Disability connections for patients when necessary, including analyzing patients' history and physical records to determine disability.
  • Negotiate settlements or establish payment plans, exploring options for partial or full charity support by completing financial assessment applications and collecting required documents.
  • Manage daily work queues (WQS) comprising unsecured accounts, taking necessary actions such as making phone calls, sending written communications, and applying appropriate codes and time frames.
  • Assist 'walk-in' customers seeking support and handle customer service inquiries over calls.
  • Handle Sponsorship referrals from the Care Management Team.
  • Responsible for Point of Service collections and EPIC documentation when required.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED
  • 3 years of experience in financial advising, claims processing, collections, customer service, or revenue cycle roles, including areas such as admitting, patient accounting, prior authorizations, or pre-registration.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and escalate tasks effectively.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication.
  • Typing speed of 45 words per minute.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Epic software.
  • Familiarity with CPT-4 and HCPCS coding.
  • Knowledge of both Commercial and Government Insurance systems.
  • Understanding of payor websites.
  • Knowledge of transplant procedures (BMT and/or Solid).
  • Working understanding of CMS regulations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
