Emergency Veterinary Assistant Job Description

We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Emergency Veterinary Assistant to join our team at VCA Midwest Veterinary Referral & Emergency Center. As a key member of our Emergency and Critical Care Service, you will play a vital role in providing exceptional patient care and delivering outstanding client experiences.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in patient exams and routine procedures, including restraining and preparing patients for examination and treatment.
  • Take detailed medical histories and patient vitals, including temperature, pulse, and blood pressure.
  • Fill prescriptions as allowed by law and perform laboratory work and assist with diagnostic imaging.
  • Provide compassionate care for hospitalized animals, including administering medications and monitoring patient condition.
  • Assist our Doctor and Technician staff as needed, including preparing equipment and supplies for procedures.
  • Manage client invoices and charge for emergency services appropriately.
  • Maintain accurate and complete medical records, including patient histories and treatment plans.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment, adhering to infectious disease protocols and handling medical/biomedical and infectious waste appropriately.
  • Maintain inventory and supplies for procedures and patient husbandry.

Requirements:

  • Minimum 1 year experience working in a veterinary hospital.
  • High School Diploma/GED or equivalent.
  • Excellent communication skills necessary to interact effectively with coworkers, referring veterinarians, clients, and patients.
  • Ability to work independently while supporting a busy, high-producing department.
  • Compassion for pets and people, understanding and respect for others' choices.
  • Willingness to work varying shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. and be exposed to hazards associated with allergens, contagious diseases, noises, odors, bites, scratches, and animal waste.
