Job Summary

The University of Massachusetts Medical School seeks a highly skilled and experienced Animal Care and Facilities Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of animal husbandry and care activities. This key role is responsible for managing the husbandry and animal care activities in a major research animal program, ensuring the highest quality and cost-effective operation of the animal facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise and Manage Direct Reports: Supervise and manage direct reports, as assigned by the Associate Director, Animal Care and Facilities, to ensure the smooth operation of animal care activities.
  • Develop and Implement Animal Care Policies: Assist in the development and modification of animal care policies, procedures, and practices that promote high-quality, cost-effective operation of the animal facilities.
  • Coordinate Training and Certification: Coordinate the training of animal care staff for their animal care responsibilities and help prepare staff for AALAS certification.
  • Provide High-Quality Animal Care Services: Interact with faculty and staff to provide high-quality, responsive animal care services and advise on technological changes affecting laboratory animal research and care.
  • Ensure Quality Assurance and Compliance: Provide and support a quality assurance program to monitor the effectiveness of animal care and animal welfare, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local animal regulatory requirements.
  • Manage Budget and Resources: Review annual budget projections for equipment and supplies for accuracy and completeness, assist with identifying equipment and supplies needed, and provide an estimate on quantity needed for the upcoming year.
  • Perform Other Duties: Perform other duties as assigned, including weekend and vacation work, to ensure the smooth operation of animal care activities.
Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in business management or any of the life sciences (e.g., animal science, biology, microbiology) or equivalent.
  • Experience: At least 5 years of experience in an AAALAC-accredited laboratory animal facility, including at least 3 years as a Supervisor or Manager.
  • Certifications: American Association for Laboratory Animal Science certification at the Technologist level, and AALAS certification as a Certified Manager of Animal Resources is preferred.
  • Skills: Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, good organizational skills, and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
