As a Large Animal Care Specialist, your essential duties will include:Facility Maintenance:
In alignment with hospital cleaning protocols, uphold a sanitary and healthy environment for the animals housed in our facility by cleaning and disinfecting stabling areas, stalls, aisles, and feed rooms.
Ensure an adequate supply of necessary materials.
Support large animal clinicians, staff, and students as required. Maintain daily care and cleanliness of the hospital's teaching herd and associated facilities.
Animal Care:
Provide bedding, feed, and water.
Deliver individualized patient care as directed by clinicians or residents.
Assist with grooming and bandaging.
Maintain the physical appearance of animals, particularly at discharge. Groom the teaching herd.
Additional Responsibilities:
Assist Senior Veterinary Technicians with special projects as needed.
The large animal care team interacts directly with clients during admissions and discharges, as well as during care, and must project a professional and knowledgeable demeanor.
Qualifications:
Basic Requirements:
A minimum of 3 years of experience handling and working with large animals.
Knowledge and experience typically acquired through a High School diploma or equivalent.
Valid U.S. driver's license.
Basic computer proficiency.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. with or without accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications:
Vocational/technical training or an Associate's Degree with 3+ years of animal care experience.
Experience in loading and unloading large animals.
Familiarity with forklift operation.
Physical capability and dexterity to manage livestock feed containers, grain bags, and bales of hay and straw.
Ability to operate forklifts and waste containers for handling livestock waste materials.
Knowledge of the feeding and care requirements for various livestock.
