PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct a range of technical procedures, including in vivo and in vitro studies; operate radiation detection and measurement equipment, including stationary imaging devices and scintillation gamma cameras.
- Prepare and administer radiopharmaceutical materials to patients; formulate these materials from pre-prepared kits. Regularly calibrate instruments and analyze calibration data to identify trends that may indicate equipment issues. Compute data related to patient studies and radioactive decay.
- Assess recorded images for technical quality and process computerized image data, including functional curves and reconstructed SPECT and PET/CT images.
- Attend to the physical and emotional needs of patients of all ages during examinations.
- Manage inventory of supplies in designated areas; maintain records related to the receipt, dispensing, and disposal of radiopharmaceuticals. Keep thorough documentation of therapy procedures and radioactive material handling.
- Provide guidance and instruction to radiologic technology students and assist in training new staff members.
- Request and organize all necessary patient information, including medical charts and charge slips for examinations.
- Perform daily quality assurance checks on equipment, including routine surveys and wipe testing as mandated.
- Monitor the Nuclear Medicine Department using portable survey meters to check for contamination.
- Ensure adherence to radioactive materials licensing requirements.
The individual in this role must demonstrate current competencies relevant to the position.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Graduate from an AMA-accredited nuclear medicine technology program.
EXPERIENCE: A minimum of one year in nuclear medicine is preferred, along with completion of 16 hours of training in PET/CT as required by state regulations.
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Must hold a license from the State of Florida and possess ARRT (N) or NMTCB (CNMT) certification, along with BLS certification.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Technical principles and procedures of nuclear medicine technology.
- Quality care standards applicable to nuclear medicine.
- Understanding of anatomy (cross-sectional) and physiology.
- Radiation safety and protection protocols for staff, patients, and visitors.
- IV placement and management competencies.
- Proficiency in using computer and network systems for processing and submitting images for radiologist interpretation.
- Emergency response knowledge, including AED operation, crash cart location, and oxygen tank usage. Ability to respond calmly and effectively to allergic reactions or medical emergencies.
ABILITIES:
- Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, patients, and families.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Capability to clearly explain procedures to patients.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS: Requires full range of motion and the ability to lift, carry, or move items weighing up to 50 pounds. Involves positioning patients and necessitates 20/20 correctable vision.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Medical office, examination, and treatment rooms. Potential exposure to radiopharmaceuticals, communicable diseases, and other conditions typical in a radiology setting. Work locations may vary.
