Job Title: Mechanical Engineer II - Space Applications

We are seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Engineer II to join our team in Etna, PA, US. As a key member of our Space Applications team, you will be responsible for designing and developing thermal protection systems for spacecraft and launch vehicles.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform mechanical and thermal analysis on Space Nuclear Power (SNP) systems and components
  • Design Thermal Protection Systems (TPS) including both active and passive systems
  • Qualify reactor internals components for launch and operation
  • Develop test plans, post-process results, and perform validation of analysis methods
  • Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders, customers, partners, and suppliers
  • Perform trade studies to optimize technical and programmatic variables of complex problems
  • Identify, define, and direct the approach for successful resolution of risks, issues, and opportunities
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Nuclear Engineering or a related field
  • Minimum of 2 years of applicable experience
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis (Thermal Desktop and ANSYS preferred)
  • Demonstrated experience correlating analytical models with experimental test results
  • Proficient in CAD (AutoDesk Inventor & SpaceClaim preferred)
  • Strong interpersonal & organizational skills to work effectively on fast-paced multi-disciplinary teams
Desired Skills:
  • Master's degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Nuclear Engineering or a related field
  • Experience developing components and/or systems for spacecraft or launch vehicles
  • Experience with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
  • Experience with spacecraft operation, including orbital mechanics
  • Familiarity with fluid system and thermal-hydraulic design
  • Knowledge of polymer matrix composite (PMC) and/or ceramic matrix composites (CMC)
