Job Description

Patterson-UTI Drilling is seeking a highly skilled Lead Controls and Automation Engineer to join our team. As a key member of our controls and automation group, you will be responsible for leading the design, development, and maintenance of drilling rig control systems software and hardware.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in control systems engineering, with experience in PLC/PAC/SBC programming, HMI development, and data logging. They will also have excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to work closely with development engineers, product development managers, and technical services teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and modification of new and existing drilling rig control systems
  • Provide feedback and guidance to employees to ensure constant progression of work scopes
  • Mine large sets of data to diagnose and resolve dysfunction within drilling rig control systems
  • Provide accurate system diagrams, loop diagrams, block diagrams, and network diagrams for new or existing software systems
  • Generate design documentation, drawings, operation manuals, and related material for systems code and hardware
  • Enforce all processes for software change control to ensure that changes are introduced in a controlled and coordinated manner
  • Generate work tasks, organize the ordering and delivery of equipment and materials, and oversee the efficient installation and commissioning of software and equipment

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline or related field
  • Proven experience in ladder logic design and implementation
  • 5+ years of HMI development
  • 5+ years of proven experience with PLC/PAC/SBC programming and HMI development
  • Experience with standard communications protocols (Ethernet/IP, Profibus, Profinet, CANBUS, OPC UA, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a multi-developer environment
  • Proven experience with PLC/PAC/SBC programming related to drilling controls and automation
  • Experience in HMI development using Wonderware / WinCC
  • Experience in Omron PLC programming using CX-One software
  • Experience in deploying solutions using Labview
  • Working knowledge of VFD drives and related equipment used in the drilling industry, preferably Converteam and Yaskawa VFDs

Additional Details:

This position requires the ability to work in a time-sensitive, high-visibility role and regularly travel as needed to support business units and visit work sites. The Engineer must work with an emphasis on planning, multitasking, and prioritization to maximize efficiency of the team. Must be able to work closely with others and manage customer interaction in a professional manner.

Ability to safely navigate work sites with occasional walking, climbing, standing, stepping, working at heights, etc., during normal operating conditions (day/night, outdoor hot/cold weather) and while utilizing designated personal protective equipment (PPE).
