Job Summary:

Cambridge Health Alliance is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Pathology Assistant to join our team in the Grossing Room. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for assisting in the preparation of human surgical specimens and performing other assigned duties to ensure optimal patient care and the safety and efficiency of the Pathology Department.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Accurately and efficiently provide gross descriptions of all surgical specimens
  • Independently troubleshoot issues with Dragon Voice recognition software
  • Create new templates for dictation using Dragon Voice
  • Accurately and efficiently dissect tissue and prepare it for processing
  • Accurately and efficiently print cassettes as needed
  • Accurately and efficiently complete worksheets for each specimen
  • Ensure specimen comments, including IHC, special stains, and levels, are transcribed correctly onto the specimen worksheets
  • Accurately and efficiently perform frozen sections with staining and delivery of frozen section slides within acceptable time limits
  • Prepare touch preps and stain slides as needed
  • Provide high-quality photographs of gross specimens and microscopic slides
  • Provide high-quality digital pictures with diagrams as needed for complicated cases and deliver specimens to radiology for new images
  • Efficiently deliver tissue, hardware, or other foreign bodies to doctors' offices or directly to patients as needed
  • Willingly assist in the printing of proofs of dictation and other patient information as needed
  • Load specimens on the processor as needed

Gross Room Quality Control and Equipment Maintenance:

  • Correctly perform all required daily and monthly instrument procedures according to department-specific schedules and protocols
  • Effectively troubleshoot and resolve quality control failures and instrument failures
  • Independently contact technical service representatives when required to resolve problems
  • Ensure the fume hood is functioning properly at all times
  • Maintain an adequate supply of inventory at all times
  • Ensure the grossing room is kept clean and organized
  • Ensure there is appropriate monitoring of all temperature-dependent equipment
  • Ensure there is proper management and labeling of chemicals and chemical hazardous waste

Team Skills:

  • Participate daily in the team effort to efficiently complete all required department work within the appropriate time interval
  • Constructively analyze work processes and contribute to the team effort to improve workflow as needed
  • Identify opportunities for improvement and willingly adjust as change is needed
  • Actively participate in committee/task force team meetings as assigned
  • Attend and participate in all department meetings, read minutes, and complete assigned follow-up tasks within the required deadline
  • Demonstrate flexibility in resolving scheduling issues
  • Train new employees by accurately conveying information on policies and procedures of the department
  • Verify their work until they are able to work independently
  • Support department initiatives with technical knowledge, active participation in work groups, and education for other departments
  • Acknowledge supervisory roles of the managerial and medical staff of the laboratory

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Readily assist in the organization and coordination of anatomic pathology conferences
  • Participate as required
  • Readily assist in the preparation of documents and tissue for send-out cases as needed
  • Assist the pathologists in the preparation for accreditation inspections
  • Write technical procedures as needed in accordance with established technical guidelines
  • Readily perform other tasks as assigned or directed by the manager

Safety:

  • Keep work area disinfected by washing surfaces with appropriate disinfectant at frequent intervals
  • Understand and apply principles in the Laboratory Bloodborne Pathogen Control Plan
  • Adhere to universal precautions at all times
  • Understand and apply principles in the Laboratory Chemical Hygiene Plan
  • Use appropriate safety attire and devices according to guidelines
  • Demonstrate adequate knowledge of disaster responses and all other laboratory and CHA safety policies
  • Demonstrate adequate competency in response to fire drills, chemical spill drills, and infectious spill drills
  • Successfully complete annual review training in Safety and Risk Management within designated time period
  • Demonstrate techniques to minimize exposure to formalin fume exposure and pass formalin badge testing annually
