Hampton Roads Transit is seeking a highly skilled Transportation Supervisor to oversee the movement of public transit vehicles and ensure efficient operation of our services. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for coordinating and directing the activities of our communication control center, supervising personnel, and performing administrative tasks.
Key Responsibilities- Coordinate and direct the movement of public transit vehicles
- Supervise personnel and ensure scheduled and special services operate efficiently
- Monitor and control all phases of bus fleet and non-revenue vehicles
- Respond to emergencies and special needs, and resolve transit service disruptions
- Provide supervision, counseling, and coaching to transit operators
- Enforce HRT rules, policies, and procedures to ensure safety and quality of service
- Participate in staff meetings and attend other meetings, training sessions, and seminars as required
- Investigate and respond to accidents and incidents
- Meet with City and public officials to develop plans and schedules for street closures, detours, and new developments
- Work on departmental and interdepartmental projects, committee work, and communicate with management teams regarding all-important issues involving transit service
- Ability to work with limited supervision from the Manager of Bus Transportation
- Ability to learn the procedures and operation of a complex two-way radio and computer terminal system
- Ability to operate a radio system, solve operator problems, react quickly and calmly in an emergency situation, and adopt an effective course of action within established guidelines
- Ability to handle heavy radio traffic
- Ability to use independent judgment and initiative in accordance with accepted policies and procedures when faced with difficult or emergency situations
- Ability to maintain courteous and tactful under stress and pressure from customers, vehicle operators, and co-workers
- Considerable knowledge of the service area, routes, and types of equipment
- Ability to work independently and concentrate for long periods of time
This position requires the ability to coordinate with maintenance, risk management, and security departments as needed to manage incidents. The Transportation Supervisor will work in a fast-paced environment and must be able to adapt to changing circumstances.
