Position Overview
Facilities Services plays a crucial role in supporting the mission of higher education institutions by ensuring the efficient operation and maintenance of physical plants and grounds. This role involves the use of work-issued vehicles and encompasses the operation, upkeep, and repair of both low and high-pressure steam boilers, along with associated mechanical systems in a centralized Power Plant.

Key Responsibilities
30% - Operation and Monitoring: Responsible for the operation of boilers, pumps, air compressors, de-aerators, water softeners, valves, regulators, and pneumatic controls to sustain optimal steam pressure, temperature, and water levels. Conducts inspections of safety alarms, pumps, valves, and piping systems, ensuring proper functionality and scheduling maintenance as needed. This includes the requirement to navigate multi-level stairs and vertical ladders while performing duties.

30% - Piping System Management: Engages in the fabrication, assembly, installation, and maintenance of piping systems, valves, and equipment related to boilers and pumps, adhering to national plumbing codes and specific operational guidelines. This involves selecting appropriate materials based on technical schematics and planning installation sequences using specialized tools.

25% - Equipment Maintenance: Participates in cleaning, replacing, installing, lubricating, and repacking various components to maintain the power plant's operational integrity. Assists senior operators in overhauling pumps and ensuring compliance with safety regulations.

10% - Additional Duties: Aids in resolving issues related to water breaks, steam distribution inconsistencies, or electrical feeder problems. May also assist with snow removal and surface treatment tasks.

5% - Other Responsibilities: Performs additional tasks as assigned.

Position Requirements
  1. Ability to lift and carry weights up to 20 pounds consistently and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  2. Capability to navigate multi-level stairs and vertical ladders.
  3. Willingness to work in various temperature and weather conditions.
  4. Ability to operate in environments with high noise levels and confined spaces.
  5. Availability for overtime and after-hours emergencies.

Required Qualifications
  1. High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
  2. Minimum of six months experience in boiler and/or hot water heater operations, with vocational training as a substitute.
  3. Possession of a valid driver's license at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Demonstrated knowledge of boiler operation theory and steam generation.
  2. Experience with mechanical systems, including air compressors and water softeners.
  3. Ability to utilize equipment manuals and maintain accurate operational records.
  4. Understanding of water chemistry and safe operating codes.

Compensation and Work Schedule
The advertised salary range is competitive, with additional benefits including paid vacation, sick leave, and retirement programs. The work schedule consists of four days on shift, including two 12-hour and two 8-hour shifts, with three days off.
