Position Overview
Facilities Services plays a crucial role in supporting the mission of higher education institutions by ensuring the efficient operation and maintenance of physical plants and grounds. This role involves the use of work-issued vehicles and encompasses the management of both low and high-pressure steam boilers along with associated mechanical systems in a centralized Power Plant.

Key Responsibilities
30% - Operation and Monitoring: Responsible for the operation of boilers, pumps, air compressors, de-aerators, and water softeners to maintain optimal steam pressure, temperature, and water levels. This includes conducting safety checks on alarms, pumps, and valves, as well as monitoring gauges and thermometers to ensure proper functioning. The role requires performing inspections on various equipment to schedule necessary repairs or preventive maintenance, including water testing.

30% - Piping System Management: Engage in the fabrication, assembly, installation, and maintenance of piping systems, valves, and equipment related to boilers and pumps. This involves adhering to national plumbing codes and utilizing technical manuals and schematics to select appropriate materials and plan installation sequences.

25% - Equipment Maintenance: Participate in the cleaning, replacement, installation, and lubrication of filters, pipes, pumps, and valves to maintain operational efficiency. Assist in emergency repairs on boilers and prepare them for inspections, ensuring compliance with safety standards.

10% - Additional Duties: Support senior operators in troubleshooting issues related to water breaks, steam distribution irregularities, and electrical feeder problems. Assist with maintenance tasks such as snow removal and surface treatment.

5% - Other Responsibilities: Perform additional tasks as assigned.

Position Requirements
  1. Ability to lift and carry weights up to 20 pounds consistently and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  2. Capability to ascend and descend multi-level stairs and vertical ladders.
  3. Adaptability to work in varying temperature and weather conditions.
  4. Willingness to work in environments with high noise levels and confined spaces.
  5. Availability for overtime and after-hours emergencies.

Required Qualifications
  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Minimum of six months experience in boiler or hot water heater operations; vocational training may substitute for experience.
  3. Valid driver's license required at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Demonstrated knowledge of boiler operation and steam generation.
  2. Experience with mechanical systems including air compressors and pump repair.
  3. Ability to interpret equipment manuals and maintain accurate operational records.
  4. Understanding of water chemistry and safe operating codes.
