Position Overview:

We are seeking a visionary Animation Director to lead and motivate our talented team of animators. This role is crucial in shaping the animation direction for our upcoming high-fidelity action-adventure games. As the Animation Director, you will combine strategic leadership with hands-on involvement, significantly impacting the gameplay experience through the execution of high-quality animations.

As an award-winning AAA studio, we are looking for an Animation Director who can tackle the challenges of directing and managing all aspects of animation for our esteemed titles, ensuring the delivery of top-tier AAA quality.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Establish and drive the overall animation vision in collaboration with the Creative Director and Art Director, ensuring consistency in the game's visual and interactive identity.
  • Collaborate closely with Department Leads, Animators, and Designers to evaluate and fulfill the animation needs of the game.
  • Lead and mentor a team of skilled animators, guiding the creation of high-fidelity animations and systems.
  • Develop engaging combat and traversal animations in partnership with combat designers and engineers.
  • Set and oversee team objectives, aligning deliverables with project timelines and milestones.
  • Direct and conduct motion capture sessions for both gameplay and cinematic performances as required.
  • Manage and review the work of co-developers and external vendors across various locations and time zones.
  • Oversee the entire animation pipeline, from narrative/storyboarding to fully implemented in-game content.
  • Leverage the diverse strengths of your team to produce exceptional quality animations.
  • Encourage team development through regular one-on-one meetings, performance evaluations, and targeted training.
  • Foster a collaborative team environment that values open communication and constructive feedback.
  • Streamline animation processes to boost team productivity throughout the game development lifecycle.
  • Document and manage animation tasks and workflows.
  • Guide animators across various styles, ensuring a unified animation approach throughout the project.


Qualifications:
  • Significant experience in a leadership role within animation (Director, Lead, or Principal Animator) in the game development sector, particularly for high-fidelity action-adventure titles.
  • Proven leadership skills with a history of nurturing and developing animation talent.
  • Comprehensive understanding of gameplay systems, especially in third-person perspectives, including weapon, traversal, melee, and ranged combat animations.
  • Expertise in animation trees, blending techniques, and node-based animation editors.
  • Proficiency in Motion Capture, Motion Matching, Maya, and real-time game engines/editors.
  • A collaborative approach, particularly in working with design and engineering teams.
  • Portfolio showcasing relevant work (e.g., demo reel, contributions to shipped titles). An ideal portfolio will include:


• Recent examples of realistic animations that highlight your skills and expertise.

• A breakdown sheet detailing your specific contributions to each piece is highly recommended.

• Note: If you directed others, we would expect a director's cut.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with cinematic tools in Unreal Engine.

Bonus Qualifications:
  • Experience shipping 2+ AAA titles as an Animation Director.


Essential Skills:
1. Gameplay Animation – Experience collaborating closely with the design department to integrate world-class animation performances with engaging gameplay (particularly in third-person combat/traversal).
2. Performance and Cinematics – Experience managing full pipelines (both internal and external), from narrative/storyboarding to fully implemented in-game content.
3. Motion Capture Pipeline – Experience directing and conducting shoots for both gameplay and cinematic purposes.

The Animation Director will oversee 1 Animator and collaborate with an external studio.
