Department Overview

The Computer Science Department is dedicated to producing skilled graduates ready to contribute to the technology sector. We provide Bachelor's degree programs in Computer Science, Data Science, and a joint program in Computer Science and Linguistics. Our Master's degree offerings include Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Data Science (in collaboration with the Department of Mathematics and Statistics), and Computational Linguistics (jointly with the Department of Linguistics and Language Development). Our faculty comprises outstanding educators with practical and research experience in areas such as machine learning, data science, artificial intelligence, information security, mobile networking, and bioinformatics. The Department fosters strong connections and partnerships with the Silicon Valley tech community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Teach a total of 15 weighted teaching units (WTUs) each semester, which may include teaching courses (most are 3 WTUs) and fulfilling administrative/service responsibilities.
  • Recognize and address the diverse needs of a varied student population, including factors such as age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic status, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation through inclusive teaching materials and strategies.
  • Utilize the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) to organize all classes.
  • Ensure all classes are conducted as scheduled throughout the semester, in the designated format (in-person, synchronous, or hybrid).
Minimum Qualifications
  • Qualifications and experience requirements vary by rank:
  • L-A: Master's degree in computer science or a closely related field with at least two years of teaching experience.
  • L-B: Master's degree in computer science or a closely related field with a minimum of five years of professional experience, including teaching; or a Ph.D. in computer science or a closely related field.
  • L-C: Master's degree in computer science or a closely related field with at least nine years of professional experience, including teaching; or a Ph.D. in computer science or a closely related field with a minimum of five years of professional experience, including teaching.
  • Applicants must demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching excellence and possess a broad knowledge of computer science or data science. Proficiency in written and spoken English is required.
  • Availability to teach on the SJSU campus during late afternoon and evening hours as needed.
  • Demonstrated awareness and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural student body, gained through cross-cultural study, training, teaching, or comparable experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in computer science or a closely related field.
  • Previous teaching experience at SJSU or similar institutions.
Compensation
