Job Overview:

LIBRARY CLERK/MEDIA TECHNICIAN

Key Responsibilities:
Under the general supervision of the school principal, the Library Clerk/Media Technician is responsible for maintaining library systems at the school level.

Core Functions:

  • Provides assistance with library, audio-visual, and computer research to both staff and students.
  • Handles clerical and para-professional tasks related to the circulation of library materials, including books, periodicals, and audio-visual resources.
  • Educates students on library research techniques and develops engaging lessons to foster a love for reading.
  • Manages the check-in and check-out process for library materials; orders new books and supplies as necessary.
  • Keeps an updated computer catalog and inventory of library resources.
  • Creates engaging displays and bulletin boards to promote reading.
  • Organizes materials and manages supply orders as needed.
  • Ensures a quiet and focused environment within the library.
  • Demonstrates the ability to comprehend, read, and execute both oral and written instructions.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Encourages reading through creative displays, posters, and book reviews with students.
  • Maintains a list of requested books for future acquisition.
  • Designs lessons and activities to teach library skills and stimulate interest in reading.
  • Sends notifications for overdue materials and collects fines for lost items.
  • Assists classes with research assignments and trains parent volunteers.
  • Prepares and processes library materials for circulation, checking for damage and making repairs as needed.
  • Collaborates with the principal to assess and plan for the library's future needs.
  • Participates in meetings with administrators and librarians to discuss budget requirements.
  • Assists staff and students in navigating computer resources, including CD ROM and network access.
  • Attends library clerk and grant meetings to stay informed and engaged.
  • Manages the birthday book club, ensuring children select their birthday books and preparing them for library inclusion.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the Principal.

Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with library terminology and standard practices.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of library materials and current literature.
  • Ability to apply library rules and processes for cataloging and maintaining resources.
  • Capable of preparing and maintaining accurate reports and records.
  • Proficient in typing and using Macintosh computers; knowledgeable in relevant software and CD ROM materials.

Education and Experience:

  • At least six months of experience in a sub-professional library role, preferably within a school setting.
  • Proficient in using Macintosh and personal computers, with knowledge of relevant software and CD ROM materials.

Physical Requirements:

  • Position involves moderate physical exertion, including the ability to lift, carry, push, pull, or climb.
  • Requires physical stamina for sustained work; strength and endurance for moderate physical tasks.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. and carry objects weighing over 15 lbs.
