About the Role

BioMarin is seeking an experienced Associate Director to lead our state government affairs efforts in the Eastern United States. This is a critical role that will require strategic thinking, excellent communication skills, and a deep understanding of the state legislative and regulatory systems.

Key Responsibilities
  1. State Advocacy: Develop and implement a comprehensive state government affairs strategy to advance BioMarin's business objectives in the Eastern United States.
  2. Legislative Analysis: Provide in-depth analysis of state legislation and regulatory initiatives to identify potential impacts on BioMarin's business.
  3. Reporting and Communication: Prepare regular reports on state legislative activity and communicate key findings to internal stakeholders.
  4. Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain relationships with state legislators, administration staff, and regulators to educate them on the importance of biopharmaceutical innovation and advocate for equitable access to BioMarin's products.
  5. Collaboration and Teamwork: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including Patient Advocacy, Regulatory, Medical Affairs, Commercial, and Clinical Operations, to advance BioMarin's regional efforts and achieve company goals.
Requirements
  1. Experience: 6-8 years of experience in political, government, and/or related healthcare business environments, with a strong understanding of state legislative and regulatory systems.
  2. Legislative or State Legislative Work Experience: A plus, with a strong understanding of how politics, policy trends, and the legislative/regulatory process impact BioMarin's strategic goals and the rare disease community.
  3. Knowledge of State Legislative and Regulatory Systems: Significant knowledge of state budgeting processes and experiences, with a thorough understanding of Medicaid system and differences in state operation.
  4. Interpersonal and Communication Skills: Excellent interpersonal skills, with proven ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with cross-functional colleagues and external stakeholders.
  5. Project Management and Organizational Skills: Strong project-driven organizational skills, with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Travel and Work Environment

This role requires frequent travel throughout the United States, with a minimum of 40-60% travel time. The employee will be based in the D.C. office and will be required to work in a fast-paced corporate culture.

Education and Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and/or professional degrees in law, public policy, political science, public health, project management, or related field.
