Job Overview

The Peer Recovery Support Specialist position is a grant-funded role focused on providing essential non-clinical assistance and advocacy for individuals pursuing recovery from substance use. This position is ideal for someone with personal experience in overcoming substance use challenges and who is committed to helping others navigate their recovery journey.

Key Responsibilities

Peer Support:

  • Provide individualized support to those in recovery, sharing personal insights to build trust and encourage motivation.
  • Lead SMART Recovery meetings and facilitate peer-led support groups.
  • Offer crisis intervention and support as necessary.
  • Extend peer support services to students and community members.
  • Collaborate with local crisis response units and shelters to enhance support services.

Resource Navigation:

  • Assist clients in accessing vital community resources, including housing, employment, and healthcare services.
  • Guide individuals through the enrollment process for treatment programs and mental health services.

Advocacy:

  • Champion the rights and needs of individuals in recovery within the community.
  • Empower clients to develop self-advocacy skills.

Education and Outreach:

  • Conduct outreach initiatives to promote awareness of recovery resources.
  • Engage in community events to foster understanding and reduce stigma surrounding recovery.
  • Provide training on Narcan usage within the community.

Collaboration:

  • Work alongside a multidisciplinary team to ensure comprehensive care for clients.
  • Participate in team discussions and contribute to treatment planning.
  • Build partnerships with community organizations to enhance prevention and treatment efforts.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of client interactions.
  • Prepare necessary reports and documentation as required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Essential Skills and Qualifications

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in addiction treatment/prevention or a related field preferred, or certification as a peer-support specialist, with relevant experience considered.
  • Personal experience with substance use and a minimum of two years of sustained recovery.
