Position Overview

SUMMARY

The Rappahannock Area Community Services Board is seeking a dedicated Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) to provide essential support in our Residential Crisis Stabilization program. This role involves conducting comprehensive assessments and recommending appropriate levels of care for individuals facing substance use challenges alongside mental health concerns. The counselor will develop, implement, and oversee personalized treatment and service plans, offering supportive counseling and advocacy throughout the client's stay.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Employ ASAM criteria to assess and refer clients to suitable levels of care for ongoing treatment post-residential stay.
  2. Collaborate with clients, their families, and other service providers to create tailored treatment plans.
  3. Maintain accurate clinical records, including progress notes, crisis plans, and both group and individual documentation.
  4. Deliver individual and group psychoeducation and skills restoration using evidence-based practices.
  5. Facilitate discharge planning and ensure continuity of care related to substance use and mental health support.
  6. Work closely with the treatment team to coordinate interventions from intake through aftercare.
  7. Connect clients with community resources and support services.
  8. Identify gaps in resources and communicate these for future service planning.
  9. Consult and coordinate with external agencies as needed.
  10. Participate in mandatory meetings, training sessions, and supervision as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

In-depth knowledge of substance use treatment methodologies and local service delivery systems is essential. Candidates should possess a strong understanding of various disorders, treatment modalities, and interventions relevant to individuals with substance use and mental health issues. Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, along with the ability to build rapport with clients and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, are crucial.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

A Bachelor’s degree in a human services discipline is required, with a preference for candidates who have experience working with substance use and mental health populations.

CERTIFICATIONS

A valid driver's license and eligibility for Virginia CSAC certification are mandatory. Additionally, a Qualified Mental Health Professional-A (QMHP) certification is required.
