Role Summary
The City of Roanoke is in search of a skilled Horticultural Maintenance Specialist responsible for executing comprehensive landscape and turf care. This includes a variety of tasks such as planting, pruning, fertilizing, mulching, watering, and applying treatments to a diverse range of plant species including flowers, shrubs, trees, and ground covers. The ideal candidate will also engage in lawn care activities such as mowing, edging, aerating, and seeding.
The successful applicant will be tasked with installing and revitalizing landscapes, assisting in the propagation of plants, and maintaining clean and safe public spaces by removing debris and litter. Proficiency in operating both heavy and light machinery for seasonal maintenance tasks is essential. Knowledge of various mowers and industry-standard equipment is preferred, along with the ability to perform routine maintenance on such equipment.
Qualifications and Skills
A degree in horticulture, plant science, or a related discipline is preferred, or equivalent experience in landscape maintenance or horticulture. Candidates must be able to obtain necessary permits and licenses related to commercial driving and pesticide application within specified timeframes.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute skilled landscape maintenance tasks including planting, pruning, weeding, and fertilizing.
- Demonstrate strong plant identification skills and maintenance knowledge.
- Assist in the propagation of plants and preparation of soil.
- Apply pesticides and complete required documentation.
- Conduct turf maintenance activities such as mowing and aerating.

- Perform routine maintenance on facilities and equipment.
- Operate various types of mowers and specialized equipment.
- Support city events through setup and teardown activities.
- Utilize basic office equipment and software for record-keeping and reporting.
Supervisory Duties
May oversee seasonal staff as needed.
