Highway Department Maintenance Worker

The Vigo County Highway Department is seeking a highly skilled and physically fit individual to operate various trucks and equipment to maintain County roads, bridges, and rights-of-way. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for performing routine maintenance on trucks and equipment, hauling and spreading materials, and assisting with various road maintenance duties.
Responsibilities
- Operate a variety of trucks and equipment, including dump trucks, snow plows, and front-end loaders, to clear, maintain, and repair County roads, bridges, and rights-of-way.
- Haul, dump, and spread materials such as blacktop, rock, sand, and aggregate as required for assigned projects.
- Perform routine maintenance on trucks and equipment, including checking fluid levels, changing oil, and washing vehicles.
- Assist with various road maintenance duties, including cutting and removing fallen trees, clearing brush and weeds, and removing dead animals and other debris.
- Perform manual labor as required to complete work assignments, including shoveling materials, digging holes, and lifting/carrying materials and supplies.
- Operate various power and/or hand tools, such as hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, drills, and saws, to perform duties.
- Respond to emergencies and perform related duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Ability to meet all County hiring requirements, including passage of a medical exam and a drug test.
- Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of Department safety policies and procedures.
- Ability to operate various hand and power tools and heavy equipment.
- Ability to physically perform assigned duties, including driving for long periods, lifting/carrying objects weighing in excess of 50 pounds, and working in extreme temperatures.
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, and the public.
- Ability to comply with all employer and Department policies and work rules.
- Perform duties often involve continuous physical exertion, driving for long periods, and exposure to normal hazards associated with road maintenance.
- Regularly exposed to heavy machinery, traffic, excessive noise, moving parts, grease, dirt, dust, toxic chemicals, vehicle fumes, and inclement weather.
- Must follow safety precautions at all times to avoid injury to self or others and wear protective gear according to Department policy.
