Job Summary

Vigo County, Indiana is seeking a highly skilled Road Maintenance Technician to join our team. As a key member of our Highway Department, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient maintenance of our county roads, bridges, and rights-of-way.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate a variety of trucks and equipment, including dump trucks, snow plows, and front-end loaders, to clear, maintain, and repair county roads, bridges, and right-of-way.
  • Haul, dump, and/or spread materials such as blacktop, rock, sand, aggregate, and cinders as required for assigned projects.
  • Regularly inspect and maintain trucks and equipment to ensure proper fluid levels and mechanical functions.
  • Respond to emergency situations, including snow and ice removal, and perform manual labor as required to complete work assignments.
  • Operate power and hand tools, such as hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, and drills, to perform duties.
  • Assist with various road maintenance duties, including cutting and removing fallen trees, clearing brush and weeds, and removing dead animals and other debris.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Ability to meet all county hiring requirements, including passage of a medical exam and a drug test.
  • Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of department safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to operate various hand and power tools and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to physically perform assigned duties, including driving for long periods, lifting/carrying objects weighing in excess of 50 pounds, and working in extreme temperatures.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with coworkers, other county departments, and the public.
  • Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules.
Working Conditions

The incumbent performs duties often involve continuous physical exertion, driving for long periods, lifting/carrying objects weighing in excess of 50 pounds, and working in extreme temperatures. The incumbent performs majority of duties in trucks/equipment and outdoors and is regularly exposed to normal hazards associated with road maintenance, including heavy machinery, traffic, excessive noise, moving parts, grease, dirt, dust, toxic chemicals, vehicle fumes, working in confined areas, extreme temperatures, wet/icy conditions, and inclement weather.
