Job Overview

The Recreation Specialist plays a vital role in the planning, organization, and execution of recreational programs aimed at children residing in temporary shelters. This position may require flexibility in scheduling, including early evenings and occasional weekends.

Key Responsibilities
  • Activity Development: Design and implement family-oriented activities within the shelter, focusing on essential life skills such as homemaking, nutrition, budgeting, and financial literacy.
  • Client Outings: Organize outings tailored to the evolving needs of clients and their children.
  • Partnership Building: Forge collaborations with external recreational organizations and facilities.
  • Community Liaison: Act as a bridge between the shelter and local recreational resources.
  • Event Planning: Plan and execute special events within the facility.
  • Field Trip Coordination: Arrange field trips and facilitate participation in community and holiday celebrations sponsored by the Department of Homeless Services.
  • Collaboration: Work with community providers to create recreational opportunities for clients and students.
  • Resource Management: Maintain relationships with cultural institutions to promote awareness and attendance at special events.
  • Family Support: Accompany families to events, ensuring a safe and structured environment.
  • Volunteer Management: Organize and oversee parent and escort volunteer groups.
  • Time Management: Effectively manage time and coordinate program activities.
  • Transportation Coordination: Collaborate with partners to arrange transportation services for special events.
  • Documentation: Maintain and submit logs of all completed and upcoming activities.
  • Additional Duties: Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Program Director.
  • Progress Reporting: Regularly update progress on the Midway Living portal.
  • Scope of Work: Fulfill other duties aligned with the position's responsibilities.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 6 months of relevant experience.
  • Completion of a 2-hour Mandated Reporter training course (can be completed upon hire).
