Position Overview

The University of Massachusetts Amherst is seeking a dedicated individual for the role of Junior Power Plant Operations Engineer. This position is essential for ensuring the safe and efficient functioning of the Central Heating Plant's equipment and systems.

Key Responsibilities

The selected candidate will:
  • Oversee shift operations at the Central Heating Plant, ensuring safe startup and shutdown of equipment.
  • Maintain compliance with all safety protocols and operational procedures.
  • Document shift activities and maintain accurate operating logs.
  • Conduct basic inspections and perform minor repairs on mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Execute routine chemical testing and monitor gauges and meters.
  • Manage the safe handling and storage of chemicals and fuel.
  • Ensure cleanliness and maintenance of the work environment.
  • Assist in the development of operational and maintenance procedures.
  • Utilize the computerized maintenance management system for work order execution.
  • Identify hazards and implement corrective actions to maintain a safe working environment.

Qualifications

Applicants must possess:
  • A Third-Class Stationary Engineer's License from the Massachusetts Department of Public Safety.
  • A Grade 2-I Certificate of Competency or the ability to obtain it within one year.
  • Basic proficiency in English, with a high school diploma preferred.
  • Knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems related to power plants.
  • Familiarity with safety policies and procedures in high-energy environments.

Preferred Skills

Experience with gas turbine operations is advantageous.

Working Conditions

Candidates should be prepared to work in a power plant environment, including the ability to use ladders and industrial equipment. Physical fitness is required for heavy tasks, and certification for respirator use may be necessary.
