Your Opportunity
Stantec GS is on the lookout for a proficient Aquatic Ecosystem Specialist to become part of our team.

The specialist will apply their knowledge in coral ecology and water quality to manage various tasks related to marine resource assessment, data gathering and analysis, as well as documentation and reporting.
Your Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct underwater assessments of mitigation efforts.
  • Collect biological and GIS data both underwater and from vessels.
  • Organize, analyze, and ensure quality control of data.
  • Assist in documenting ongoing mitigation projects.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • In-depth understanding of underwater survey methodologies, data collection techniques, data management, quality assurance, and reporting.
  • Proven experience in identifying coral reef species, both native and invasive, in marine environments.
  • Ability to spend extended periods underwater in challenging visibility conditions while managing multiple tasks.
  • Willingness to perform fieldwork on vessels for extended hours.
  • Familiarity with GIS tools, particularly ArcGIS and Esri software, is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Experience in underwater photography is a plus.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with the capability to convey technical information to non-specialist audiences.
  • Experience collaborating with diverse teams in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to pass background checks.
  • Strong command of English, both written and spoken, with excellent grammatical skills.
  • Knowledge of risk communication strategies.
  • Capacity to work independently or as part of a team, demonstrating meticulous attention to detail and critical thinking.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Adobe.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license with a clean record.
  • Residency in the relevant geographic area is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision.
  • Drug screening is a prerequisite for this position.
  • Familiarity with federal, state, and local regulations is advantageous but not essential.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in marine biology, environmental science, natural resource management, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in underwater data collection, coral reef ecological assessments, marine restoration, or similar roles, showcasing the ability to manage diverse and demanding projects.
  • 40 Hour HAZWOPER certification, adhering to OSHA standards, is preferred but not required.
  • Active diver status from the American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) or the ability to achieve this status promptly.
