Overview:


The Aquatic Supervisor is responsible for collaborating closely with the department manager to ensure that Curator department protocols and standards are upheld consistently; this includes scheduling of associates based on operational needs.

The Aquatic Supervisor will be required to gain proficiency in timekeeping procedures, ordering protocols, and receiving procedures.

This individual works closely with the department manager to ensure that the maintenance and procurement of supplies, equipment, feed, and other necessary items for the department are managed effectively.

The Aquatic Supervisor will maintain all Aquarist records to ensure they are current, including CPR/First-Aid training and refresher training as required, and scheduling recurrent rescue training techniques.

This individual will specifically oversee the maintenance of all SCUBA-related equipment, schedule annual overhauls of all SCUBA regulators utilized by the department, and ensure that all SCUBA cylinders are scheduled for visual inspections and hydrostatic tests to prevent shortages of essential equipment.

The Aquatic Supervisor will be responsible for ensuring that all SCUBA cylinders are kept filled and properly inspected.

The Aquatic Supervisor will be required to acquire and maintain basic pump room operation knowledge to the manager's approval and be capable of inspecting and performing backwashing in the pump room daily.

This individual will oversee standards and performance of divers during feed dives and maintenance/cleaning, and suggest improvements to enhance safety or performance and equipment needed to promote those ends.


Responsibilities:

Fundamental Requirements:
Adhere to and enforce all Highgate Hotel policies.

Possess knowledge of and assist in all emergency procedures as required.

Be able to perform, complete, and ensure that all tasks and duties on the shift checklist are executed in a timely and efficient manner.

Participate in departmental meetings, planning, and execution.
Help maintain productivity levels at or above budgeted standards.
Assist in training and cross-training of new hires and current employees regularly.
Able to perform daily backwashing requirements in the pump room along with basic maintenance and checklist of that area.
Follow all departmental requirements, especially regarding the personal safety of associates.

Able to safely complete a 20-minute feed dive and maintenance/cleaning dives of up to 60 minutes on each scheduled shift.

Dive safely at all times.
Report immediately any situation that could lead to or is perceived as immediately hazardous.
Prepare fish food for feed dives and subsequently store food properly.
Maintain cleanliness standards as described by departmental protocol.

Perform up to three dives each scheduled shift while always maintaining awareness of decompression status as defined by their SCUBA training agency.

Perform out-of-water assigned tasks as required.
Assist in feed/maintenance of any and all holding, quarantine, or display aquariums within the hotel.
Keep up-to-date input of all data in all logs as required.
Participate in new projects as needed by hotel operations or as assigned or requested by the department manager.
Attend meetings in accompaniment or in place of the department manager as necessary or required.

Ensure time schedules, ordering, receiving, scheduling of tasks, inspection of daily checklist items, and input of daily data is maintained.


Qualifications:

Education & Experience:
A college degree or trade school in a technical discipline is preferred.
A science background, technical training, or equivalent experience is preferred.
Understanding of technical aspects of aquarium systems is preferred.
Certified as a Rescue Diver or equivalent by a recognized SCUBA certification agency. Higher dive ratings are a plus.
College coursework in related fields (e.g., Marine Biology, Zoology, Ocean Sciences) is beneficial.

A minimum of 1440 hours as a Level 3 Aquarist Specialist, with the manager's approval based on performance and knowledge.

Previous supervisory or teaching responsibility is preferred.
Prior experience in a large aquarium setting is required.
Previous animal training experience is preferred.
Experience working in quarantine areas is required for Quarantine specialty.
Previous work in mechanical rooms and plumbing knowledge is preferred.
Must possess a valid driver's license for the applicable state.
CPR, AED, First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certifications for SCUBA are desired.

Physical Requirements:
Flexible and long hours may be required.
Must pass SCUBA physical and drug usage test prior to employment.
Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
Must be able to occasionally lift 50 lbs safely.
Ability to stand, walk, climb stairs, kneel, SCUBA dive, swim, and breathe-hold dive during the entire shift.
Must pass a SCUBA physical examination when required.
Certifications (CPR, AED, First Aid, O2) must be renewed before they expire.

Comply with Highgate Hotel Standards and regulations to encourage safe and efficient hotel operations.
Maximize efforts towards productivity, identify problem areas, and assist in implementing solutions.
Must be effective in handling problems, including anticipating, preventing, identifying, and solving problems as necessary.
Must be able to understand and apply complex information, data, etc., from various sources to meet appropriate objectives.
Must be able to cross-train in all areas of the Curator Department.
Must be able to maintain confidentiality of information.
Must be able to show initiative, including anticipating guest or operational needs and needs of the department.
Perform other duties as requested by management.
