About the Role

We are seeking a skilled Respiratory Therapist PRN Tier IV to join our team at Sovah Health - Martinsville. As a key member of our respiratory care team, you will be responsible for providing high-quality patient care and contributing to the delivery of exceptional patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Examine patients with breathing-related conditions and conduct diagnostic testing
  • Consult with physicians to develop and implement a treatment plan for the patient
  • Perform physiotherapy and other treatments, and teach patients to use medications
  • Measure lung capacity and analyze blood samples using a blood gas analyzer
  • Deliver and assess response to ordered therapy per plan of care
  • Monitor, record, and communicate patient condition as appropriate
  • Evaluate respiratory care policies and procedures based on patient outcomes, current research, and best practices
  • Respond to codes and calls for emergent assistance, assessing patient condition and delivering appropriate treatment
  • Educate patients and families about the patient's illness and provide information about community support groups and other resources
  • Monitor, receive, stock, and distribute respiratory care supplies and medical gas cylinders
  • Maintain storage areas with required supply levels and equipment
  • Disassemble, clean, and sterilize equipment, and perform preventative maintenance and calibration of machines
  • Provide diagnostic and therapeutic interventions on physician-prescribed patients with acute and chronic cardio-pulmonary dysfunction, utilizing state-of-the-art procedures and bio-medical equipment
  • Coordinate and participate in the administration of medical gas therapy, humidity therapy, aerosol therapy, NT, ETT, and tracheostomy suctioning, and tracheostomy care
  • Perform twelve-channel electrocardiograph examinations
  • Evaluate, initiate, monitor, and wean patients from mechanical ventilation
  • Perform Holter Monitoring set-up, instruction, and analysis
  • Perform Event Recorder set-up, instruction, and data collection
  • Participate as a member of the cardiac Arrest Team responding to emergency or STAT calls to establish natural and artificial airways, including oro/naso endotracheal intubations
  • Provide clinical instruction on the proper use of equipment to hospital staff and patients; make rounds with physicians to discuss preferred treatment methods for individual patients
  • Set up and perform arterial catheterization; monitor and troubleshoot homodynamic equipment
  • Participate in the routine maintenance of equipment; make periodic rounds to ensure proper functioning of bio-medical equipment
  • Transport patients requiring manual ventilatory support or supplemental oxygen to various locations within the hospital or to other hospitals
  • Assist in the orientation and training of new personnel
  • Perform simple portable spirometry
  • Post charges into the hospital information system
  • Participate in the department Quality Assurance Program
  • Participate in preoperative and post-operative evaluations of patients
Requirements
  • Graduate of an approved Respiratory Care Program, with an A.A.S. degree, Certification of Graduation, or equivalent
  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action
  • Requires full range of body motion, including handling and lifting patients, manual dexterity, and eye and hand coordination
  • Requires standing, walking, stooping, and stretching
  • Occasionally lifts, carries, and pushes items weighing up to 100 lbs.
  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range
  • Requires working under stressful conditions and extended shifts
Preferred Qualifications
  • AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) required
  • Licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia, to practice as a Respiratory Care Practitioner
  • Certification by the American Heart Association in Basic Life Support
  • Registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care (CRT) or (RRT) required
Work Experience

Tier II - V: Minimum 18 months of RRT hospital experience; Minimum 36 months of CRT hospital experience
