Job Title: Experienced Railcar Repair Technician

Union Tank Car Company is seeking a skilled and experienced railcar repair technician to join our team. As a part of Marmon Holdings, Inc., we rely heavily on people with the aptitude, attitude, and entrepreneurial spirit to drive our success.

Job Summary:

The railcar repair technician conducts all aspects of repair and maintenance on tank cars. This person must demonstrate good leadership and team skills while being a safety-conscious individual.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct railcar inspections to ensure cars comply with all FRA, AAR, and customer requirements
  • Perform repairs as necessary while always using current safety and quality standards and repair procedures
  • Perform mechanical repairs to railroad freight cars including tank and hopper cars when required
  • Occasionally perform welding repairs when needed
  • Coordinate and complete repairs in an efficient manner and within assigned hours
  • Maintain work area in a neat and orderly manner and report potential hazards
  • Notify supervision of any materials and/or equipment required to ensure completion of job tasks
  • Interact well with team members and supervision
  • Meet the expectations and requirements of all customers to ensure we deliver a best-in-class customer experience
  • Ensure all necessary invoicing, inspection, and work order information is accurate and complete
  • Actively participate in safety assessments and equipment inspections
  • Follow all safety rules and practices
  • May be involved in safety committees or initiatives
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements:
  • Have a High School Diploma or GED
  • Demonstrate job-related knowledge including following written instructions
  • Demonstrate an ability to safely operate machinery including, but not limited to large work vehicles, which may also pull trailers from time to time, and forklifts
  • Be dependable and reliable to show up for scheduled work shifts including any overtime
  • Ability to learn basic railcar knowledge
  • Proficiency with the use of basic hand and power tools
  • Ability to learn basic knowledge of how to read Engineering drawings
  • Ability to pass DOT Requirements is a plus
  • Ability to perform confined space entry or monitoring and create hot work permits
  • Ability to pass any required NDT disciplines and function specific certifications, which may include tank car welding, and demonstrates strong familiarity with AAR rules and regulations
  • Ability to obtain the following within months (timeline and required test depend on specific location): Welding and Airbrake Test certifications
  • Any type of welding/mechanical experience or railcar knowledge is a preferred
  • Must be legal to work in the United States now and in the future without sponsorship requirements
Environmental and Working Conditions:

The physical environment for this job requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat or cold, wet, humid, or dry and dusty conditions. The employee may be frequently exposed to heights that require the use of fall protection equipment. Team members are required to use personal protective equipment as environmental conditions and job function details dictate.

  • Moderate to heavy physical effort involved, must be comfortable lifting 35lbs consistently
  • Lifts and carries necessary equipment to railcar to perform work
  • Safely climbs, walks, and balances on top of railcars while performing repair work
  • Must follow prescribed safety rules to avoid possible injury
