Certified Medication Assistant

Position Summary:
The Certified Medication Assistant (CMA) plays a crucial role in overseeing caregiver personnel during their shifts, ensuring the delivery of exceptional resident care while adhering to the philosophy of the residence and prioritizing resident welfare. The CMA is responsible for the accurate administration of prescribed medications to residents, in compliance with state regulations and the policies of Oaks Senior Living. This role also involves providing individualized care and services to residents, maintaining adherence to Oaks Senior Living policies and procedures, effectively responding to emergencies, and safeguarding residents' rights to safe, prompt, and confidential treatment.

Key Responsibilities:
Resident Care Services
1. Execute all assigned duties efficiently as directed by the Wellness Director and/or the Executive Director. Supervise the caregiver staff on duty to ensure quality care and address the needs of residents in alignment with the Oaks Senior Living philosophy of Person-Centered Lifestyle and resident rights.
2. Follow each resident's Negotiated Service Plan and inform the Wellness Director, Manager on Duty, and/or the Executive Director of any changes in resident condition.
3. Promptly respond to resident calls for assistance.
4. Seek guidance from the Executive Director or the Wellness Director if there are uncertainties regarding medication or treatment tasks before proceeding.
5. Assist with meal service and oversee caregiver staff in the dining area, ensuring cleanliness post-meal.
6. Prevent the spread of infection by adhering to standard precautions and disposing of waste according to residence policies.
7. Foster positive relationships with residents and their families.
8. Address resident emergencies following established protocols.
9. Aid in developing and maintaining a caregiver staff schedule that meets resident needs and ensures adequate staffing levels.
10. Manage on-the-job injuries in accordance with Oaks Senior Living policies.
11. Complete 24 hours of continuing education in the first year of employment and 16 hours annually thereafter, as required by the Alliant GMCF Registry. Maintain CPR and First Aid certification.
12. Model exemplary behavior, encourage teamwork, and promote the Oaks Senior Living philosophy.
13. Maintain an open-door policy for employees to discuss any concerns or grievances.
14. Ensure CPR and First Aid certification is current.
Medication Management
1. Adhere to the six 'rights' of medication administration (right resident, right drug, right dosage, right time, right route, right documentation) consistently. Verify each of the six 'rights' three times: when retrieving the medication, immediately before administration, and immediately after.
2. Administer medications according to the Medication Observation Record (MOR) while safeguarding resident privacy. Provide any necessary treatments as outlined in the Resident Care Plan. Document all medication administration accurately on the MOR following Oaks Senior Living policy.
3. Respect residents' rights to refuse medication or treatment. Ensure resident safety during medication administration and explain the purpose of each medication prior to giving it.
4. Monitor residents for any adverse reactions to medications and report findings to the Wellness Director and/or the Executive Director without delay. Report all medication errors truthfully and promptly.
Communication
1. Attend all scheduled staff meetings and mandatory training sessions.
2. Communicate residents' needs effectively with caregiver staff during shift changes, in accordance with Oaks Senior Living policies. Relay any changes in a resident's condition or behavior, adverse reactions to medications, or concerns from residents or family members to the Wellness Director and/or the Executive Director.
3. Ensure all necessary paperwork for resident care is completed and current.
4. Coordinate with the Pharmacy regarding resident medications as needed.
Reports to: Wellness Director, Executive Director, and Manager-on-Duty
Qualifications:
1. At least one year of experience in a Senior Living environment.
2. Supervisory experience in healthcare or service industries is preferred.
3. Must possess a Certified Nursing Assistant Certificate.
4. Must hold a State Certified Medication Aide Certificate.
5. Must be in good standing with the Georgia CNA/CMA Registry.
6. Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English is required.
7. A friendly and caring demeanor with a passion for working with older adults.
8. Minimum age of 21 years. A satisfactory criminal history check is required.
9. A physical examination by a licensed physician and a negative drug screen are mandatory.
10. Ability to respond effectively in emergency situations.
Physical Job Requirements:
To meet job demands, employees must be capable of performing essential physical tasks for extended periods. Proper body mechanics and safety measures must be followed when assisting or transferring residents. In a typical eight-hour workday, employees will:
1. Stand or walk for up to eight hours and sit for up to two hours.
2. Frequently support up to 70 pounds and occasionally lift or carry up to 50 pounds.
3. Frequently kneel, bend, and reach, securing assistance for resident transfers as necessary.
