Job Summary

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly skilled Family Services Specialist I or II to join our team. As a Family Services Specialist, you will be responsible for providing critical support services to individuals and families in need.

Key Responsibilities
  • Interpret and apply laws, policies, and regulations related to human services program areas.
  • Monitor, coordinate, and administer specific programs as assigned.
  • Coordinate services within specific areas of responsibility.
  • Interview and assess customer needs, and develop and implement individualized service plans.
  • Provide case management services to monitor compliance and ensure the delivery of appropriate services to clients.
  • Manage program waiting lists and track expenditures.
  • Prepare and submit budget estimates and ensure payment for services.
  • Complete necessary federal, state, and local planning and reporting requirements.
  • Coordinate with other agencies and participate in multi-disciplinary and interagency teams providing services to customers.
  • Conduct overall monitoring of programs in specific areas of responsibility.
  • Serve as a resource to clients and the community in areas of expertise.
  • Provide after-hours on-call coverage and respond to emergencies in child/adult protective services and/or foster care.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in a Human Services field or a related field with a minimum of two years of experience in a Human Services area.
  • Working knowledge of social work principles and practices, human behavior and motivational theory, laws, policies, and regulations relating to human services program areas, and social, economic, and health problems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, interview, assess needs, counsel, and refer clients to other resources as needed.
  • Ability to develop and implement service plans, make sound judgments within the framework of existing laws, policies, and regulations, and respond to client emotions to accomplish service objectives.
Special Requirements
  • Ability to work in the community shelter in the event of a natural disaster or emergency.
  • Willingness to work with diverse populations and provide services in a variety of settings.
