Job Summary

This role is responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating learning and development programs that enhance associates' performance, promote professional development, and support the mission, vision, and values of MedStar Health and the Department of Nursing.

Key Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the achievement of established department goals and objectives, adhering to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards.
  • Apply teaching techniques that promote critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and decision making, incorporating principles of adult learning theory.
  • Coach nurses and other associates, providing feedback to enhance professional nursing practice and professional advancement.
  • Collaborate with other departments, experts, and leaders to develop relevant learning programs, serving as a liaison with academic partners and clinical student placements.
  • Conduct educational activities that inform, teach, and facilitate adoption of new procedures, technologies, equipment, and patient care trends, with continuing education credits where appropriate.
  • Coordinate and plan educational offerings for nursing associates, considering mandatory regulatory requirements, quality and safety, performance improvement, and clinical advancement.
  • Demonstrate clinical expertise, leadership, communication skills, and knowledge of education theory and principles necessary to develop learning programs and achieve optimal educational outcomes.
  • Design, implement, and evaluate designated learning and educational programs, assessing learning needs through formal and informal approaches to data collection.
  • Develop evaluation plans and apply evidence-based evaluation systems to determine the effectiveness of educational activities and learning programs, involving learners in the evaluation process.
  • Identify and assess learning needs and knowledge or skill gaps that require remediation, collaborating with unit leaders to promote critical thinking and competent patient care delivery.
  • Maintain knowledge of professional development standards, available evidence, and current trends and innovations in nursing practice, clinical instruction, nursing education, staff development, and use of simulation and learning technologies.
  • Meet identified learning needs of nurses and other associates, fostering lifelong learning and supporting career advancement in a wide-range of nursing specialties.
  • Plan and conduct orientation of new personnel to facilitate a new associate's transition to the practice environment and meeting competency assessment requirements.
  • Plan and regularly conduct competency validation programs for nursing department associates, applying principles of adult learning to assess staff learning and competency needs.
  • Support and participate in the transition to practice of newly licensed nurses using the MedStar Health New to Practice Nurse Residency Program.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams as appropriate, participating in meetings, serving on committees, and representing the department and hospital/facility in community outreach efforts as needed.
Requirements
  • Master's degree in Clinical Nursing, Nursing Education, or a related field.
  • 3-4 years of progressive clinical nursing experience, with staff development or continuing education experience preferred.
  • Valid RN license in the State of Maryland.
  • Demonstrated high level of clinical competence, effective interpersonal skills, including verbal and written communication, basic math skills, and basic computer skills.

This position has a hiring range of $87,318 - $149,094.
