Field Service Technician - Heavy Equipment

Position Overview:

The Field Service Technician plays a crucial role in fostering relationships between Taylor Machine Works, Inc. and our clients by delivering timely and effective service and support. Reporting directly to the Service Supervisor, this position is essential for maintaining customer satisfaction and operational efficiency. Technicians are typically assigned specific territories but may be called upon to assist in various locations as needed.

The technician is expected to cultivate a strong rapport with customers, demonstrating genuine interest in their operations through the following responsibilities: (a) upon delivery of equipment - assembling if necessary, conducting inspections, training operators on equipment functionality, and outlining warranty and maintenance protocols; (b) making routine follow-up visits as time allows; (c) providing prompt and effective repair or replacement services; (d) accurately documenting time, parts, travel, etc., to ensure proper billing.



Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with the Service Supervisor to develop an efficient work and travel schedule, prioritizing customer needs while considering machine locations and parts availability.
  • Diagnose equipment malfunctions, repairing or replacing worn and defective components, and installing new assemblies to maintain operational integrity.
  • Provide necessary tools and parts, and arrange for facilities to perform repair work, typically at customer sites.
  • Inspect, operate, and test machinery upon initial delivery, at designated inspection intervals, and after repairs to ensure optimal functionality.
  • Report to the Service Supervisor with detailed information including customer name, machine description, nature of the malfunction, time spent working, driving, and waiting, as well as mileage, to facilitate accurate billing.
  • Enhance technical skills through participation in company-sponsored vocational training, annual departmental meetings, and by reviewing technical literature.
  • Uphold the company’s image by maintaining a professional appearance and ensuring the service vehicle is clean and organized.
  • Experienced technicians may serve as troubleshooters for complex issues, collaborating with Engineering, Manufacturing, and other service personnel to find solutions.
  • Advanced technicians may be responsible for training new staff or supervising teams during assembly or servicing of large units or significant repair projects.


Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Physical capability to perform tasks including stooping, bending, climbing, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • A valid driver's license with a clean driving record is necessary, as the role involves operating company vehicles.
  • Must meet DOT certification requirements.
  • Willingness to occasionally stay overnight at off-site locations.
  • Basic computer proficiency is required.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and other technical documentation.


Education and Experience:
  • Vocational or formal education in hydraulics and diesel engine repair is preferred.
  • A minimum of three years of hands-on experience in diesel mechanics and hydraulics is required, with education potentially substituting for some experience.
  • While passing the AWSD14 Welding Test is not mandatory, the technician is encouraged to develop welding skills for future advancement opportunities.
