JOB SUMMARY:
The Oncology Registered Nurse (RN) will exhibit a comprehensive understanding of the nursing process, integrating holistic, family-centered care through the systematic collection, verification, and organization of patient health data. This role involves planning, implementing, and evaluating care tailored to individual patient needs.
The RN will deliver both direct and indirect patient care within the Oncology Unit, ensuring a high standard of compassionate, proactive, and responsible care with minimal supervision. Additionally, the RN will serve as a resource and mentor for less experienced nursing staff as required.
CARE PRIORITIES:
Determining care priorities will be based on the physical and psychosocial needs of patients. The RN will navigate ethical considerations related to cancer pain management, end-of-life decisions, body image changes, and informed consent.
The RN will possess a thorough understanding of chemotherapy, including administration methods, delivery rates, drug properties, and safe handling practices.
EDUCATION AND SUPPORT:
Ongoing education will be provided to patients and their families regarding medications, anticipated side effects of chemotherapy, and management strategies, as well as safe handling of bodily fluids and body image issues. Emotional support will be extended to patients and families during challenging times, including end-of-life situations.
COMMUNICATION:
The RN will effectively communicate with physicians, nurse managers, and colleagues regarding any changes in a patient's clinical status, including diagnostic study results and symptomatology. The ability to respond promptly and accurately to changes in patient condition or treatment response is essential.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
The RN will also perform general nursing duties across various departments with appropriate supervision.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must demonstrate the ability to accept responsibility as an oncology staff RN. A graduate of an accredited professional nursing program is required.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION:
Current Montana RN license is mandatory. BLS certification is required, and certification in Oncology Nursing is preferred. Completion of a Chemotherapy/Oncology course and competency to administer chemotherapy is required within six months to one year of hire. Continued education and competencies in chemotherapy are required annually or as needed.
APTITUDES:
Candidates should possess the cognitive, organizational, and emotional maturity necessary to manage multiple tasks, stressful situations, and deadlines effectively. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential for providing empathetic patient care and fostering positive customer relations. Flexibility in scheduling and adaptability to changing departmental assignments are also important.
