Senior Compliance Accountant

This position entails significant administrative responsibilities within the Finance Division, encompassing a range of tasks such as preparing for external audits, conducting internal audits, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations. The role operates with a degree of autonomy.
Key ResponsibilitiesSupport the external auditor in completing the annual audit and other audit-related tasks as designated by the Treasurer.
Compile and manage various accounting reports and intricate records; evaluate reporting needs and suggest sections for staff preparation.
Create documentation for the audit process to establish a comprehensive audit preparation guide, detailing timelines, report generation, and information retrieval.
Guarantee that the Finance and Occupational License Department activities comply with all applicable state and federal regulations, as well as the standards set by the local finance officer.
Ensure the establishment, maintenance, and documentation of internal controls in alignment with organizational objectives.
Conduct regular reviews of financial transactions and account reconciliations.
Monitor the county credit card program(s) for any irregularities.
Prepare quarterly compliance reports for the county administrator's review and approval.
Oversee fixed asset recordkeeping and collaborate with relevant departments to ensure accuracy.
Examine occupational license tax returns for discrepancies and delinquencies, engage with non-compliant entities, and perform audits for legal adherence.
Maintain a mindset focused on continuous improvement to enhance established processes.
Additional ResponsibilitiesUndertake special projects as assigned.
Reporting StructureThis position reports to the Treasurer, with separate internal audit reporting to the County Administrator and Judge/Executive.
QualificationsEducation and Experience:
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in accounting or a combination of experience and training that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities. A minimum of 5 years of audit/compliance experience is required.
Language Proficiency:
Strong verbal communication skills to effectively interact with colleagues, management, and the public; ability to provide clear and concise explanations and directions.
Writing Skills:
Proficient in drafting clear and concise correspondence, reports, and documentation.
Mathematical Skills:
Competence in basic arithmetic operations and the ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages.
Reasoning Skills:
Adept at identifying problems, gathering data, and drawing valid conclusions. Capable of interpreting complex information and solving practical issues.
Certifications:
CPA certification is preferred.
Other Skills:
Ability to foster positive relationships with colleagues and management. Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and capable of training others in software use.
Ability to type, sit or stand for extended periods, and lift up to 25 pounds. Must be able to pass a drug test.
Work EnvironmentKnowledge of safe work practices is essential. The office environment may have moderate noise levels and fluctuating temperatures.
Personal AttributesMust demonstrate positive communication, objectivity, and a commitment to problem-solving. Adherence to departmental rules and regulations is required, along with maintaining confidentiality and personal integrity.
