Job Title: Research and Development Formulator

Job Summary:

The Research and Development Formulator is responsible for developing and commercializing new products, including dietary supplements and pharmaceutical dosage forms. This role requires a strong foundation in chemistry, mathematics, and food science, as well as excellent communication and problem-solving skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop robust product formulations in accordance with customer specifications and good manufacturing practices.
  • Prepare technical documentation, including quotations, master batch records, and verification protocols.
  • Source raw materials and obtain price quotes and vendor documentation.
  • Coordinate production and/or produce product prototypes for internal and/or customer evaluation.
  • Identify and develop cost savings or process efficiencies.
  • Provide technical assistance to Sales, Manufacturing, Procurement, Quality, and other departments.
  • Conduct production trouble-shooting and implement solutions.
  • Maintain accurate records of all projects and assignments.

Requirements:

  • Proficient skills in reading, writing, and speaking in English; bilingual (English/Spanish) skills a plus.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Good knowledge and practical experience with product/process development, processing laboratory techniques, and regulatory requirements.
  • Firm foundation in chemistry, mathematics, pharmaceutics, and/or food science.
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of nutritional ingredients, products, formulations, and their claims.
  • Ability to robustly formulate, develop, and successfully commercialize new products in a manufacturing fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to problem solve complex manufacturing issues and make recommendations.
  • Effective planning and organizing skills; ability to handle multiple tasks/duties.
  • Proficient PC skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Effective problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of general office skills and administrative procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to maintain a positive, professional, cooperative demeanor and working relationship with peers, management, employees, and other individuals.

Selection Guidelines:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent GED Certificate; and
  • College Degree in Food Science, Biology, Chemistry, Pharmacy, or other relevant science training in an accredited college/university; plus
  • 3 or more years of work experience in a fast-paced work environment; or
  • Any combination of experience, education, and training that provides the level of knowledge, skills, and experience needed to successfully perform the job.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

  • Communicates orally with management, employees, co-workers, vendors, suppliers, governmental compliance agencies, and the general public by telephone or in person.
  • Regularly uses a telephone, computer (email) and fax for communication.
  • Required to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods of time during the course of work shift.
  • Routinely required to stoop, bend, kneel, lift, and reach, in the performance of job function.
  • Requires the essential use of hands, speech, eyesight, and hearing.
  • Lifting limitations for this position: 25-30 lbs. May have to manipulate heavier containers.
  • Vision requirements include close and distance vision, color vision, peripheral and depth vision, and the ability to adjust focus as needed.
  • Requires incumbent to sit and operate computer for extended periods of time during the course of work day, and the ability to proficiently use the computer keyboard for typing.
  • Noise level for this work environment is typically low to moderate. Some work areas require hearing protection for an 8-hour workday.
  • Periods of odoriferous environment.
  • Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. Personal Protective Equipment provided as necessary.
  • Work environment may involve exposure to chemicals, solutions, detergents, or solvents that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of personal protective equipment.
  • Work environment may involve exposure to allergens such as Soy, Wheat, Fish, Shell Fish, Milk, Egg, Tree nuts, and Sesame.
