Position Overview
The Virginia Tech Transportation Operator plays a crucial role in the movement of faculty, staff, students, and visitors across various destinations using university-owned passenger buses and state vehicles. This position requires flexibility, as trips may be scheduled throughout the week, including evenings and weekends. In addition to driving duties, responsibilities encompass loading and unloading baggage, maintaining accurate trip logs, assisting passengers with disabilities, fueling and cleaning vehicles, and reporting any maintenance concerns. A vital aspect of this role is delivering outstanding customer service to all individuals on board.
Employees in this position are also expected to engage in additional tasks as needed, contribute positively to the workplace atmosphere, adhere to professional conduct standards, embody the Virginia Tech Principles of Community, and uphold the university's guiding motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).
Essential Qualifications
Licenses & Certifications
- Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B or higher, with endorsements for passenger transport and air brakes.
- Must hold and maintain a DOT medical certification.
- Successful completion of all required pre-employment screenings, including background checks, driving history, and drug testing for CDL drivers. This position is also subject to random, reasonable suspicion, and post-accident drug and alcohol testing.
Experience
- Demonstrated experience operating large motor vehicles, such as passenger buses.
- Background in passenger transportation services.
Skills & Abilities
- Capability to sit, stand, and walk for extended durations.
- Adherence to safety regulations and state laws governing vehicle operation.
- Proficient in the safe operation of passenger buses and other vehicles.
- Able to handle items weighing up to 50 pounds and operate automotive equipment and fuel pumps.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience with charter or passenger buses, or large passenger vans.
- Strong customer service background.
- Familiarity with the Virginia Tech campus environment.
Compensation Information
Pay Band: 2
Appointment Type: Regular
Hourly Rate: $17.50
Additional Information
Selected candidates will be subject to criminal background checks and driving record evaluations, along with random drug testing.
