Job Summary
The Director of Purchasing will be responsible for managing the purchasing of supplies and products used at a location. This includes formulating an approved vendors list, purchasing and approving payment of items following established procedures, and ensuring compliance with all brand-established systems and procedures.
Candidate Profile
A bachelor's degree in Finance and Accounting or a related major, or a minimum of 4 years' experience in Purchasing or a related field, is required. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to manage and motivate a team.
Core Work Activities
The Director of Purchasing will be responsible for:
- Generating and providing accurate and timely results in the form of reports, presentations, etc.
- Compiling, coding, categorizing, calculating, tabulating, auditing, or verifying information or data.
- Ensuring compliance with all brand-established systems and procedures.
- Creating a Purchase Requisition/Purchase Order System for the property and ensuring employees are trained on this system.
- Conducting inventories.
- Ensuring accurate administration of all invoices and adhering to proper bookkeeping procedures.
- Maintaining operations by developing policies and procedures.
- Ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
- Ensuring inspection of all deliveries to verify accuracy and quality of product.
- Ensuring compliance with food handling and sanitation standards.
- Implementing and enforcing all control procedures for property goods entering through the purchasing/receiving areas.
- Ensuring staff is properly trained regarding procedures, sanitation, equipment handling, and chemical usage.
- Ensuring compliance with sanitary procedures.
- Maintaining inventory controls for proper levels, dating, rotation, requisitions, etc.
Leading Purchasing Operations
The Director of Purchasing will be responsible for:
- Supervising operations of the Purchasing Department.
- Utilizing interpersonal and communication skills to lead, influence, and encourage others; advocating sound financial/business decision making; demonstrating honesty/integrity; leading by example.
- Ensuring employees understand expectations and parameters.
- Communicating performance expectations in accordance with job descriptions for each position.
- Establishing and maintaining open, collaborative relationships with employees and ensuring employees do the same within the team.
- Soliciting employee feedback and using an open door policy.
- Supporting a departmental orientation program for employees to receive the appropriate new hiring training to successfully perform their job.
- Reviewing employee satisfaction results to identify and address employee problems or concerns.
- Ensuring property policies are administered fairly and consistently.
Demonstrating and Applying Accounting Knowledge
The Director of Purchasing will be responsible for:
- Demonstrating knowledge of job-relevant issues, products, systems, and processes.
- Using computers and computer systems (including hardware and software) to program, write software, set up functions, enter data, or process information.
- Using relevant information and individual judgment to determine whether events or processes comply with laws, regulations, or standards.
- Keeping up-to-date technically and applying new knowledge to your job.
- Demonstrating knowledge of budgets, operating statements, and payroll progress reports as needed to maintain financial management of the department.
Maintaining Finance and Accounting Goals
The Director of Purchasing will be responsible for:
- Submitting reports in a timely manner, ensuring delivery deadlines.
- Ensuring profits and losses are documented accurately.
- Achieving and exceeding goals, including performance goals, budget goals, team goals, etc.
- Developing specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish your work.
- Monitoring all taxes that apply, ensuring that taxes are current, collected, and/or accrued.
- Managing to achieve or exceed budgeted goals.
- Managing department's controllable expenses to achieve or exceed budgeted goals.
Additional Responsibilities
The Director of Purchasing will be responsible for:
- Providing information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates by telephone, in written form, email, or in person.
- Empowering employees to provide excellent customer service.
- Keeping departments informed by confirming and clarifying purchase orders or contracts.
- Analyzing information and evaluating results to choose the best solution and solve problems.
- Providing direction and assistance to other organizational units regarding accounting and budgeting policies and procedures, and efficient control and utilization of financial resources.
- Informing and/or updating the executives, the peers, and the subordinates on relevant information in a timely manner.
Benefits and Compensation
The salary range for this position is $110,000 to $138,000 annually. Marriott offers a bonus program, comprehensive health care benefits, 401(k) plan with up to 5% company match, employee stock purchase plan at 15% discount, accrued paid time off (including sick leave where applicable), life insurance, group disability insurance, travel discounts, adoption assistance, paid parental leave, health savings account (except for positions based out of or performed in Hawaii), flexible spending accounts, tuition assistance, pre-tax commuter benefits, other life and work wellness benefits, and may include other incentives such as stock awards and deferred compensation plans. Benefits and incentive compensation may be subject to generally applicable eligibility, waiting period, contribution, and other requirements and conditions.
