Position Overview:

The Town of Barnstable is seeking a dedicated professional to engage in technical, research, sampling, data collection, and administrative tasks across various projects within the Department of Public Works (DPW).

Projects may encompass a wide range of DPW responsibilities, including horizontal infrastructure (such as water, sewer, roads, and recreational areas), vertical structures (buildings and facilities), marine projects, and solid waste management.

Key responsibilities include conducting research, gathering data, performing evaluations, planning, design, construction oversight, surveying, contracting, project management, and contract administration, along with any other related tasks as necessary.


Essential Qualifications:


A Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline is required; five (5) to ten (10) years of experience in engineering, surveying, or construction is preferred; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.


A valid Class D driver's license is required.

Possession of a Massachusetts Professional Engineer certificate is preferred.


Ability to obtain Drinking Water and Wastewater operator licenses as mandated by the specific Project Engineer role within the DPW.


Preferred Skills:


Comprehensive knowledge of Civil Engineering principles and practices, design standards, methodologies, materials, and equipment related to the maintenance, repair, and construction of DPW projects (roads, water, sewer, etc.).

Familiarity with state and local regulations governing the design, construction, and repair of DPW infrastructure. Understanding of state and local procurement regulations and policies. Knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental regulations and policies. Proficiency in engineering-related software applications.

Ability to prepare plans, specifications, cost estimates, and contract documents for construction initiatives. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare reports and maintain precise records.

Capability to work independently, handle challenging public inquiries, and maintain professionalism and courtesy in high-pressure situations.

Ability to keep accurate records, operate a computer, including word processing and spreadsheet applications. Ability to thrive in a collaborative team environment.

Proficiency in computer applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and engineering drafting and design software. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with individuals and groups.

Compensation: $3,128.08 biweekly + benefits
