Position: Estimator - Underground Dry Utilities

OBJECTIVE:

The Estimator is responsible for developing comprehensive estimates for bidding, budgeting, and scope modifications as directed by the upper management. The successful candidate will collaborate with our underground utility teams, focusing on dry utilities, which encompass transmission and distribution of gas and electricity.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Analyze proposal specifications, drawings, and existing site conditions, and participate in pre-bid meetings to ascertain the scope of work.
  • Prepare and review necessary bid documentation for submission, including special insurance, bonds, and DBE requirements.
  • Coordinate the scope of work with Project Managers and Subcontractors.
  • Engage with owners, architects, engineers, and other contractors to provide engineering insights and cost data regarding project viability.
  • Generate estimates by performing a thorough takeoff of the scope of work, encompassing all materials, labor, equipment, and subcontractor costs.
  • Maintain organized files of working documents to support estimate figures.
  • Develop budgets and assist in formulating preliminary project schedules following contract awards, which may include estimating additional work items, change orders, and credits; procuring materials; and monitoring progress, costs, and revenues.
  • Collaborate with the Purchase Order Manager to create purchase orders for each project.
  • Oversee the execution of subcontracts in conjunction with the Contract Manager.
  • Adhere to all safety program requirements established by the company.
  • Advocate for safety practices among colleagues and supervisors.
  • Undertake additional tasks as assigned by the Project Manager.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • A 4-year degree in engineering or construction management is preferred, or an equivalent combination of technical training and relevant experience is required.

LICENSE: Possession or ability to obtain a valid class C California driver's license.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Demonstrated experience in accurately estimating similar construction projects.
  • 5-8 years of estimating experience is preferred.
  • Strong writing, presentation, and computer skills are essential.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of construction processes, estimating methodologies, various engineering disciplines, cost control systems, and accounting practices is required.

SKILLS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Advanced proficiency in estimating techniques and cost controls, along with the ability to interpret computerized cost data and systems is crucial.
  • Familiarity with multiple disciplines may be necessary.
  • Exceptional organizational, communication, planning, and analytical skills are required.
  • The role necessitates regular talking, hearing, walking, standing, and sitting for extended periods.
  • Frequent use of hands for handling, feeling, and reaching is required.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle is mandatory.

The working environment includes temperature-controlled offices and exposure to outdoor elements such as rain, cold, and heat when working in open settings, as well as travel between various locations for meetings. Noise levels may vary from moderate to loud depending on the work site.
