Job Summary

This position oversees the Maintenance Department to support the manufacturing facility and corporate offices. The successful candidate will coordinate all functions of the department, providing cost-efficient maintenance services to Operations and ensuring all equipment is safe and reliable to efficiently maximize production and meet quality requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Directs the Engineering Department in the absence of the Director.
  • Coordinates all maintenance shifts, utilizing positive leadership skills and high visibility to motivate employees to achieve departmental and facility objectives, while following Standard Operating Procedures, Good Manufacturing Practices, Safe Work Practices, and established Quality and HACCP practices to ensure consistent operations support.
  • Leads and develops the maintenance shift supervisors.
  • Develops and manages an effective Preventative Maintenance Program, utilizing the most optimum preventative maintenance practices to effectively and resourcefully maintain all equipment in a productive and safe working condition.
  • Develops and implements a long-term maintenance strategy for the facility.
  • Maintains the building, facility, and areas of direct responsibility in a sound, clean condition suitable for the handling of food and food products.
  • Develops, trains, and orients mechanics and maintenance employees to improve work performance and acquaint workers with company policies and procedures.
  • Supervises employees in a union environment, following the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Administers the O-AT-KA disciplinary process in a timely and equitable manner. Confer with Human Resources on employee issues, grievances, etc.
  • Establishes and implements developmental training programs for department employees, providing trained coverage in all maintenance areas, maintaining cross-training to give a broad skill set, and continuously upgrading training in maintenance.
  • Collaborates with management, engineering, and quality control personnel to resolve maintenance problems and recommend measures to improve operations and conditions of machines and equipment.
  • Determines department and work priorities; oversees repair, maintenance, and installation of equipment to ensure continuous improvement and uninterrupted production.
  • Inspects operating machines and equipment for conformance with operational standards.
  • Manages the requisition of parts, tools, equipment, and supplies required for efficient operation and uninterrupted production.
  • Develops an employee structure to ensure that the maintenance department is adequately staffed to provide suitable coverage for all foreseeable situations, reducing downtime and maximizing run time.
  • Directs and coordinates activities of mechanics and workers engaged in repairs, maintenance, and installation of machines, tools, and equipment, and in maintenance of buildings, grounds, effluent pre-treatment, powerhouse, and utility.
  • Directs maintenance activities on utility systems to provide continuous supply of heat, steam, electric power, gas, refrigeration, or air required for operations.
  • Reviews new product plans and discusses equipment needs and modifications with Engineering, Technology, and the Vice President of Manufacturing.
  • Prepares the department budget and monitors expenditure of funds in budget, utilizing budget control of department operations to maintain costs of maintenance within budget targets.
  • Ensures compliance with company, federal, state, city, OSHA, EPA, etc. regulations.
  • Takes an active role in Capital planning for the facility.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree with a minimum of 8 years direct related experience, including a minimum of 3 years supervisory experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical manuals, contractor agreements, purchase agreements, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of directors, managers, customers, contractors, and government agencies.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual MUST have knowledge of PM and Order processing systems, CMMS, spreadsheet software, and Word Processing software.
Confidentiality

The Maintenance Manager is exposed to O-AT-KA customer and product information on a consistent basis. A high degree of confidentiality is required in this role.

Management Responsibility

The Manager, Maintenance works under the general direction of the Director Engineering and directly manages the Maintenance Supervisors, Controls Supervisor, TPM coordinator, Maintenance Planner, Maintenance Scheduler, Waste Water Facility, and Buildings/Grounds Maintenance Supervisor.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; extreme cold and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.

Employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear and smell. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
