Batavia, Illinois, United States Fermilab Full time
About Us:

Fermilab stands as the leading laboratory in the United States dedicated to particle physics and accelerator research, supported by the U.S. Department of Energy. Our mission encompasses the facilitation of groundbreaking scientific experiments both domestically and internationally, including locations such as deep underground mines and mountaintops across various continents.

We pride ourselves on being innovative thinkers, strategic risk-takers, and collaborative team members. Our workforce comprises engineers, scientists, technicians, and administrative professionals, totaling over 2,000 individuals committed to advancing knowledge for the betterment of humanity. For over four decades, Fermilab has been at the forefront of particle physics, developing state-of-the-art accelerators and detectors to conduct some of the most sophisticated experiments in the field. Our research is supported by powerful computational resources, all conducted on a sprawling 6,800-acre prairie designated as a National Environmental Research Park.

Join our team at the Accelerator Directorate (AD) as an Electrical Power Systems Engineer. In this capacity, you will become an integral part of the Power Electronic Systems Department (PESD), focusing on the design, installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of power distribution systems for both DC and pulsed power applications. Our department manages over 150 MVA of thyristor-controlled pulsed power within a medium voltage distribution framework and 75 MVA within a low voltage distribution setup. These systems are essential for the operation of particle accelerators and beam-line magnets.

Engage in pioneering projects alongside multidisciplinary teams to tackle the demanding requirements of upcoming experiments. You will have the opportunity to broaden your expertise and contribute to significant initiatives such as ACORN, LBNF/DUNE, Mu2e, and PIP II, in addition to various smaller enhancement projects.
If you are a seasoned engineer with a proactive mindset, eager to work with high-power systems and make a meaningful contribution to the realm of particle physics, this position is tailored for you.

Under the guidance of experienced engineers, your responsibilities will include the construction, modification, and commissioning of low voltage electrical power distribution systems and medium voltage switchgear. You will also assist in the design and supervision of control signal wiring installations, along with various general electrical engineering tasks.

Your Responsibilities:
  • Work on-site at our facility.
  • Collaborate within a project team, leading initiatives related to power supplies and electrical distribution.
  • Plan and oversee electrical distribution projects, ensuring adherence to timelines and budgets.
  • Manage the procurement process for electrical distribution equipment, from requisition through installation, testing, and commissioning.
  • Provide engineering support for the operation and maintenance of power distribution systems.
  • Monitor electrical system performance and recommend enhancements.
  • Analyze system failures and propose solutions.
  • Review electrical installations for compliance and efficiency.
  • Oversee cable plant activities, including power, control, and signal cables.
  • Design cable routes and layouts, ensuring proper documentation.
  • Develop procurement and installation documentation for cables.
  • Maintain comprehensive records of engineering tasks for future reference.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution with a minimum of 5 years of experience in electrical power systems or power distribution, or a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering with 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Proven ability to learn new concepts and technologies.
  • Familiarity with high power thyristor or rectifier systems.
  • Experience in the design of low and/or medium voltage high power distribution systems.
  • Proficiency with testing equipment; experience with switchgear is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of NEC and NFPA70E standards as they apply to low voltage systems.
  • Experience collaborating with equipment manufacturers and vendors is a plus.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Familiarity with electrical distribution simulation tools such as ETAP or SKM is a plus.
  • Experience with computer-aided drafting tools is beneficial.
  • Commitment to adhering to all environmental, health, and safety regulations pertinent to this role.
Fermilab is an Equal Opportunity Employer, dedicated to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment based on mutual respect, which is essential to our mission. We are committed to recruiting and developing the most dedicated individuals and do not discriminate in employment based on any non-merit factor.
