This role is integral to the National Trails office of the National Park Service, providing essential administrative support that can be performed remotely. The position is part of the NPS Experienced Services Program, a collaborative initiative designed to address workforce challenges within government agencies by connecting seasoned professionals (aged 55 and above) with the NPS for scientific, technical, and administrative assistance.
The NPS ESP roles are intended for temporary, project-based engagements, currently funded for an estimated duration of 52 weeks. A background security investigation may be necessary prior to commencement. Positions offering 30+ hours per week qualify for health insurance benefits, while all roles will accrue sick leave.
Participants in the program, referred to as “Enrollees,” are not classified as employees of the NPS or NEW Solutions. NEW Solutions manages the administrative aspects of the program, with Enrollees working under the guidance of NPS staff to support the agency's mission. Enrollees gain opportunities to maintain their technical skills, access new training, engage in meaningful project-based work, and leverage their experience to contribute positively to the environment and economy.
Qualifications:
• A minimum of 20 years of experience in NPS office administration, with recent experience within the last three years, or a BA/BS Degree in Business Administration or a related field.
- Experience in a federal office setting, with the ability to adapt to the unique operational style of the NPS.
- Proficiency in Windows, MS Word, and MS Excel.
- Familiarity with FBMS, AFS, Quicktime, and FPPS.
The Enrollee will assist with administrative functions supporting the National Trails Office’s mission to provide technical and financial assistance to various partners, including governmental entities, tribal nations, nonprofits, universities, and private organizations. Responsibilities may encompass:
- Providing guidance on federal budgeting and ensuring accurate management of office finances, including regular updates on fund status.
25% - Advising on office administration and leading a small administrative team.
25% - Offering general coaching as needed, and organizing virtual discussions on a weekly basis.
25% - Advising on customer service practices, emphasizing active listening, collaboration, and effective communication.
