Job Summary

The Veterinary Assistant plays a vital role in providing exceptional medical care to our Vetco Total Care full-service hospital patients and delivering phenomenal customer care to their owners. As a representative of our mission and values, this position sets the tone for technical and customer support in the hospital, fostering cohesion and motivation within the practice.

Key Responsibilities
  • Greet clients and patients, escort them to exam rooms, and obtain vital signs and medical records.
  • Assist doctors with appointments, surgery, dentistry, and euthanasia, under supervision from the veterinarian and veterinary technician.
  • Perform patient restraint, collect laboratory samples, handle and dispense medications, and maintain electronic medical records.
  • Schedule appointments, provide client education, relay test results, and maintain client/patient records.
  • Prepare patients for surgical and dental procedures, assist with anesthesia, and monitor patients during recovery.
  • Under supervision, perform in-hospital treatments, including giving medications and intravenous fluid therapy, and keep patients clean, watered, and fed.
  • Assist in training new staff members and disseminate knowledge as required.
  • Keep the hospital environment neat and clean, performing regular cleaning tasks based on necessity and schedule.
Requirements
  • Previous experience working in a veterinary practice or sufficient animal care experience to ensure excellent performance.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Compassion, sympathy, and a professional attitude in emotional and stressful situations.
  • Telephone and computer skills.
  • A team player willing to learn new techniques, offer creative ideas, and accept change.
Work Environment

The majority of job duties are conducted in the Veterinary Hospital, requiring bending, kneeling, lifting (up to 30 pounds), and standing for long periods. Regular communication with clients, veterinary specialists, and companies that provide products and services to the practice is essential.

Compensation

The pay range for this position is $29.50 per hour, with actual rates depending on factors such as position, location, level of experience, and applicable state or local minimum wage laws.
