Shenandoah University seeks a highly skilled Loan Specialist/Financial Aid Counselor to join its Office of Financial Aid. This full-time benefited position is located on our main campus in Winchester, Virginia.

Key Responsibilities
  • Certify student eligibility for federal and private loans, processing documents related to aid eligibility.
  • Meet with students and/or families to discuss Financial Aid-related issues.
  • Work closely with the Assistant Director of Financial Aid 2, Hornet Central staff, financial aid counseling team, and student accounts staff to ensure timely completion of paperwork.
  • Process Federal Nursing loan requests and send files to ECSI (nursing loan servicer) on a weekly and monthly basis.
  • Review and process Faculty/Staff Grant requests.
  • Maintain current knowledge of tuition assistance, including Title IV federal aid, veteran's benefits, and state aid programs.
  • Work with the Director of Student Financial Services to review Tuition Exchange and Counsel of Independent Colleges (CIC) eligibility and awarding.
  • Review and process Professional Judgment-Cost of Attendance requests.
  • Communicate with Student Accounts staff regarding enrollment changes and their impact on Financial Aid awards and tuition.
  • Perform Direct Loan and Pell Monthly reconciliation process.
  • Respond to Office of Financial Aid emails and phone calls.
  • Maintain current knowledge and compliance requirements for all federal and private loans.
  • Collaborate with private lenders to optimize certification and disbursement processes.
  • Work with the Associate Director of Student Financial Services to return private loan funds to lenders when students are no longer enrolled or eligible.
  • Conduct in-person exit interview sessions with students and mail out exit interviews in a timely manner.
  • Monitor financial aid listservs and collaborate with the team on regulation updates.
  • Stay knowledgeable about VA federal funds and tuition assistance programs.
  • Maintain proficiency in computer software used by Student Financial Services, including Ellucian and/or other reporting tools.
  • Create supporting policy and procedure documents as needed.
Requirements
  • Experience in Financial Aid is preferred.
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution.
  • Required experience in customer service.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of ability to work with computer programs such as Google products.
