Lead Mohs Histotechnician

SeaCoast Skin Surgery is an outpatient skin cancer surgery center located in Wilmington, NC. We are seeking a full-time Lead Mohs Histotech to assist in a single physician practice that emphasizes high-quality healthcare and the outstanding patient experience.

This position delivers exceptional patient service by providing oversight for the lab staff and performing duties entailing preparation of tissue specimens for routine and special procedures to be used in the assistance of confirming a diagnosis provided by the pathologist.

• Maintains lab staff schedule and trains and mentors staff.
• Assists with receipt of specimens and accessioning paraffin cases, printing cassettes, slides, and slide labels.
• Performs quality assurance checks, verifies slide and block match for each case, and compiles cases.
• Ensures stat cases are seen by pathologist with urgency and examines and prepares histologic slides from tissue sections for microscopic examination and patient diagnosis.
• Files blocks and slides appropriately, logs cases in the biopsy book, and understands slide stainer, staining cycles, and able to load/unload slide stainer.
• Operates computerized laboratory equipment to fix, dehydrate, and infiltrate with wax, tissue specimens to be preserved for study by Pathologist.
• Prepares slides of specimens, using specified stain, to enhance visibility under microscope and examines slides under microscope to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements.
• Submits any outside materials that are needed for review and may perform histochemistry (special stains) and immunohistochemistry (antibody detection) studies.
• Manages unexpected lab situations, such as problems with instruments or detecting health problems that may cause unusual test results.
• Operates and maintains instruments used for tissue processing, paraffin embedding, and sectioning of specimens.
• Performs recuts and additional stains, including special and IHC stains, as requested by the Pathologist.
• Maintains QC/QA records and documentation as required by CLIA guidelines.
• Ensures CLIA compliance, including updating CLIA manuals and procedures as needed.
• Maintains Safety Data Sheets in the lab and oversees, maintains, and records all necessary documentation for Provider Competencies for providers.
• Monitors inventory levels of supplies and equipment on a regular basis and orders supplies for laboratory.
• Orders and validates new immunohistochemistry agents used in the lab and troubleshoots equipment issues.
• Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein and treats staff, physicians, visitors, and patients with dignity and respect.

• Have completed HTL training program and is eligible to take licensing exam.
• 1 year experience in histopathology laboratory.
• Dermatology practice or office experience a plus.
