About the Role

Abilities First is seeking a dedicated and compassionate individual to join our Education Program as a Teacher Aide. This is an exciting opportunity to make a positive impact in the lives of students with developmental disabilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the Classroom Teacher and Teacher Assistant in implementing students' Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals.
  • Attend to the educational, physical, social, and emotional needs of students.
  • Follow the classroom schedule to ensure individual student goals are achieved.
  • Assist in conducting individual and group activities in the classroom.
  • Keep student workstations and areas organized.
  • Assist in the construction of teacher-developed materials.
  • Participate in staff meetings and job skill training.
  • Attend therapy sessions with students to facilitate carryover in the classroom.
  • Assist in organizing and arranging the classroom to provide a conducive learning environment.
  • Escort and assist students with mobility and orientation needs.
  • Attend specials with students, such as physical education, art, and music.
  • Provide opportunities for students' increased independence in self-dressing, undressing, and meal preparation.
  • Perform wheelchair and equipment transporting, transferring, and lifting.
  • Assist with toileting and use adaptive equipment as necessary.
  • Change clothing and diapers as needed.
  • Set out lunches and adaptive feeding equipment.
  • Feed students following occupational therapy procedures.
  • Wash feeding equipment and utensils.
  • Put on and remove orthotics, splints, and other adaptive equipment.
  • Lift and place students from prone boards.
  • Set up computers and communication devices.
  • Adhere to agency policies and procedures.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in early childhood and special education preferred.
  • Ability to push and pull students in wheelchairs, lift, bend, squat, turn in the knees, pivot, and grasp with both hands.
