This role is situated within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), specifically in the Facilities Management Service (FMS) at the Veterans Medical Center. The incumbent will act as the Green Environmental Management Systems (GEMS) Coordinator, focusing on safeguarding the environment, ensuring human health against environmental hazards, and enhancing air, land, and water quality.
Eligibility
This position is exclusively available to current permanent employees within the organization.
Key Responsibilities
1. **Program Coordination**: Lead and coordinate the GEMS initiatives among the staff to ensure adherence to VHA and VAMC standards.
2. **Continuous Improvement**: Drive the ongoing enhancement of environmental programs, utilizing scientific and engineering methodologies to illustrate the connections between facility operations and ecological health.
3. **Leadership**: Provide guidance to management and technical teams on the establishment and execution of GEMS.
4. **Project Management**: Oversee and deliver technical support for projects aimed at resolving environmental challenges, including wastewater management, safe drinking water standards, waste disposal, and air quality control.
5. **Regulatory Oversight**: Manage environmental compliance programs and facilitate coordination on environmental issues.
6. **Policy Development**: Formulate and implement environmental policies and procedures.
7. **Pollution Prevention**: Assess and implement strategies to minimize waste generation.
8. **Emergency Response**: Provide technical advice and manage responses to environmental emergencies, including hazardous material spills.
9. **Training and Education**: Develop and conduct training programs related to environmental management and safety.
10. **Budget Management**: Prepare and present budgetary proposals related to environmental initiatives.
11. **Impact Assessment**: Evaluate how facility expansions or modifications may impact the environment and recommend mitigation strategies.
12. **Stakeholder Engagement**: Serve as the primary liaison with federal, state, and local environmental agencies.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, standard working hours.
Position Requirements
Applicants must be U.S. citizens and may be subject to a background investigation. Participation in health programs may be required.
Qualifications
To qualify, candidates must meet specific experience or educational criteria relevant to environmental engineering.
Physical and Working Conditions
