General Purpose

Under general supervision, this role involves conducting surveys on avian and wildlife populations, ensuring adherence to relevant regulations. The position includes analysis and studies pertinent to the permitting, development, operation, and decommissioning of renewable energy initiatives and associated infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

• Execute surveys to assess risks of electrocution and collision, and evaluate the effectiveness of avian protection strategies on power infrastructure.

• Monitor wind energy facilities, solar installations, and power lines, documenting avian activity, mortality rates, and protective measures to mitigate risks.

• Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, along with the Company’s Avian Protection Plans and other relevant conservation strategies.

• Identify and document wildlife mortalities, including species identification and causes of death, as well as monitor raptor activity and nesting on structures.

• Implement informed curtailment strategies at operational wind facilities.

• Conduct pre-construction wildlife assessments and monitoring for proposed renewable energy and transmission projects.

• Carry out post-construction wildlife impact evaluations, including raptor nest surveys and habitat assessments.

• Manage the reporting and removal of wildlife carcasses from project sites and roadways.

• Utilize ArcPad and Trimble GPS devices for data collection, ensuring quality control of all GIS data gathered.

• Complete surveys efficiently and accurately while adhering to safety protocols in remote and variable field conditions.

• Follow company safety guidelines and maintain safe working practices.

• Fulfill required training and comply with all organizational policies and procedures.

• Maintain an understanding of wildlife and avian policies and procedures.

• Document all protected bird and wildlife mortalities in the company tracking system and create necessary maps for reporting.

• Ensure proper maintenance and accountability of field equipment.

• Communicate effectively with team leads regarding survey progress and any wildlife mortality issues.

• This position requires travel to various remote locations across multiple states.

• Assist in preparing reports for both internal and external stakeholders.

• Contribute to the development of periodic reports and summaries.

• Aid in budget planning and adherence.

Qualifications
  • Associate's degree or higher in Wildlife, Ecology, Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of two years of professional experience in wildlife or environmental science.
  • Strong skills in bird and wildlife identification.
  • Willingness to travel extensively and work in remote locations, with potential travel up to 50% annually.
  • Proficiency in GIS, GPS, database management, and MS Office applications.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of consulting on sensitive matters.
  • Proficient in using personal computers for data analysis and reporting.
  • Able to collaborate with diverse teams and present recommendations effectively.
Preferred Qualifications

Familiarity with renewable energy development, operational practices, and avian protection techniques.
