Position Overview

Under general supervision, this role involves conducting surveys related to avian and wildlife, ensuring adherence to relevant regulations. The position entails providing analysis and research pertinent to the permitting, development, operation, and/or decommissioning of renewable energy initiatives and transmission/distribution infrastructures.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct surveys to assess risks of electrocution and collision, and evaluate the effectiveness of avian protection strategies on power lines.

• Survey renewable energy projects and power lines, documenting avian activity, mortality rates, and protective measures to mitigate risks.

• Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, as well as the Company’s Avian Protection Plans and other conservation strategies.

• Identify and document bird and wildlife mortalities, including species identification and cause of death, and monitor raptor activity on structures.

• Implement informed curtailment actions at operational wind facilities.

• Conduct pre-construction wildlife assessments and monitoring for proposed renewable energy and transmission/distribution projects.

• Execute post-construction wildlife impact evaluations, including raptor nest surveys and habitat assessments.

• Report and manage carrion removal from project sites and roadways.

• Utilize ArcPad and Trimble GPS units for data collection, ensuring quality control of GIS data.

• Complete surveys efficiently and accurately, prioritizing safety in remote locations under varying environmental conditions.

• Adhere to safety protocols and complete necessary training as per company guidelines.

• Maintain knowledge of wildlife and avian policies and procedures.

• Log all protected bird and wildlife mortalities in the company tracking system and create necessary mapping for reporting.

• Ensure all field equipment is properly maintained and accounted for.

• Communicate effectively with team leads regarding survey progress and any wildlife-related issues.

• This role may require travel to various remote locations.

• Assist in preparing reports for internal and external stakeholders.

• Contribute to the development of periodic reports and budget adherence.

Qualifications
  • Associate's degree or higher in Wildlife, Ecology, Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of two years of professional experience in wildlife or environmental science.
  • Strong skills in bird and wildlife identification.
  • Willingness to travel and work in remote areas, with potential travel up to 50% annually.
  • Familiarity with GIS, GPS, database management, and MS Office applications.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficient in using personal computers for data analysis and reporting.
  • Able to collaborate effectively within a team and present recommendations clearly.
Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of renewable energy operations and avian protection techniques is advantageous.
