The mission of the Department of Law is to deliver high-quality legal representation to the citizens of Georgia, supporting state agencies, officers, and employees while fulfilling the constitutional and statutory duties of the Attorney General. The Department is structured into the Executive Office, five legal divisions, four specialty units, and an operations division. This position will focus on the Real Property, Construction, Transportation, and Authorities section within our Commercial Transactions Division.

The Assistant Attorney General acts as the legal advisor for state agencies, departments, authorities, and the Governor. Specific responsibilities vary by division. Attorneys in specialized units may pursue legal action against fraud and corruption affecting Georgia's state departments and agencies, including identity fraud, residential mortgage fraud, securities fraud, and abuse within the Georgia Medicaid program.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal counsel to state entities on issues related to government and construction law impacting real estate transactions.
  • Negotiate and draft intricate agreements for the acquisition, disposition, construction, development, and management of state properties and facilities.
  • Offer guidance on best practices regarding federal contract administration.
  • Supervise a network of Special Assistant Attorneys General involved in public works projects, including condemnation actions.
  • Litigate cases by:
    • Participating in hearings and representing cases in state and federal courts;
    • Researching and preparing legal documents such as pleadings, motions, and briefs;
    • Attending depositions, interviewing witnesses, and engaging expert witnesses;
    • Engaging in settlement negotiations;
    • Drafting pleadings and responses to discovery requests.
  • Provide legal advice and representation to clients/agencies; draft advisory memoranda.
  • Conduct research on relevant legal issues and stay updated on recent legal developments.
  • Draft formal opinions in response to legal inquiries.
  • Address inquiries from citizens, legislators, and judges.
  • Attend meetings with clients, boards, departments, and divisions as necessary.
  • Participate in continuing legal education seminars and make presentations as required.
  • Travel as necessary for the position.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited law school and membership in the Georgia Bar in good standing.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to candidates who possess one or more of the following:

  • Experience advising government, public, or non-profit organizations;
  • Experience managing matters related to both horizontal and vertical construction of state facilities.
